Inmates at the Klong Prem Central Prison will kick off an alternative World Cup football tournament today.

The tournament, known as the World Cup 2010 Behind Bars, is being held in parallel with, but one day before, the official Fifa World Cup final in South Africa which begins tomorrow.
The event is a collaboration of the Corrections Department, the Football Association of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand and the Tourism and Sports Ministry.
Two similar tournaments were successfully held at Klong Prem prison in 2002 and 2006.
Sixteen teams made up of inmates from various countries will contest this year’s tournament.
Each team is made up of seven players.
Today’s opening match will see inmates from South Africa take on Mexico, followed by France v Uruguay.
Tomorrow, South Africa will kick off the official World Cup against Mexico with France and Uruguay facing off later in the day.
The prison tournament will start again on June 25, one day before the second round of 16 qualified teams in the World Cup in South Africa begins.
The final will be played on July 10 when the match for third place in South Africa takes place.
Corrections Department deputy director-general Thanis Sriyapan said the department had received one million baht in funding from the Football Association of Thailand to organise the event.
The Sports Authority of Thailand has provided coaches to train the inmates.
“There are more than 10,000 prisoners of more than 90 different nationalities nationwide,” Mr Thanis said.
"We think of sports as a way to rehabilitate and reform prisoners before they reintegrate into society.
“Football will help them build discipline, responsibility and teamwork.”
He said only inmates with good behaviour would be allowed to take part in the tournament.
More than 100 prison guards would stand by to enforce security during the tournament. The tournament would be broadcast on Thai PBS station.

Politicians offside over Cup

The government and opposition Puea Thai Party go their different ways in politics and also in the World Cup.
Everybody, including PM’s Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey, expected Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to pick England as his favourite team because he was groomed at Eton School and Oxford University.
Surprisingly, everybody was wrong. The premier said yesterday his preferred team for the tournament was Argentina. “I’ve changed,” he told reporters at Government House.
But England need not feel left out in the political cold in Thailand. Mr Abhisit’s chief political rival, Chalerm Yubamrung, is throwing his weight behind the team from England.
The chief of Puea Thai MPs said he was cheering for England because of his familiarity with two of the Premier League’s most famous teams, Liverpool and Manchester United.
He said he was much happier watching soccer matches than fighting with the government because fair play was expected on the field.
“Football is better,” the outspoken lawmaker said.
“It has rules and referees. In Thai politics, the government plays with 14 people on the pitch. It has 11 players plus three referees on its side.”

Mr Sathit and the leader of the northeastern opposition MPs, Payap Shinawatra, have dumped their political differences to back Brazil to win the tournament. “I have gone for Brazil since I was a kid. They play with style in every match except in the one in which they lost to France,” said Mr Sathit, referring to the 1998 decider when host France comfortably beat the South American football powerhouse 3-0. He predicted Brazil to face favourite Spain in the final on July 11.
Mr Payap, a younger brother of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, gives his vote of confidence to Brazil lifting the trophy this time.

Ja, dat lawaai werkt serieus op m’n kl#ten! Normaliter kijk ik enkel tijdens het WK naar de voetbal, nu dus ook niet meer.
Eerlijk gezegt exact hetzelfde, ik verslind normaal echt iedere wedstrijd maar dat geluid echt vreselijk, dus tekenen de petitie weg met dat ding.
Het gaat mij erom op wat voor thaise zender het wk voetbal uigezonden wordt.

Behalve Hup Hup Holland Hup laat … vind ik toch altijd de strijdliederen het extra geven aan een wedstrijd met name The English kunnen dat als geen ander.
