Uit de wandelgangen heb ik trouwens gehoord dat het salaris bij Selectcamp verhoogd wordt in 2012! Weet niet precies hoeveel, maar altijd goed nieuws toch.
Dit lijkt me inderdaad beter!

10+ things (I wanted) to know as a courier/campingrep
-
Before you continue with reading, keep in mind that it’s a very nice job. I had the summer of my life and definitly consider doing it again.
-
It’s all about the guests. That should be the central point in what you do, don’t do, pretend to do and think.
-
No matter how much euphemisms they use, in general the central part of the job is cleaning. This has a very BIG advantage: you can work in the way and tempo you want because unlike being waiter or working at a reception, there are no guests looking at your fingers or waiting for you (except the arrivaltime).
3a) There are 50 grades of clean. Which grade you clean depends on the time you have and your own mentality. The time spent for a level higher is exponentional eg. the time needed from good to almost-perfect is two times the time needed from almost-acceptable to good.
3b) A little screwdriver or swiss knive is very handy to clean the corners. Don’t forget to look from above (on a chair) or under (on your knees) things and closets because the guests do that to.
3c) Hairs and dust are your enemy. Get them out as soon as possible otherwise it will stay and you’ll find it back in another place. Start with a clean broom and dustpan.
3d) Take a good handcream with you. Your hands will be dry. Use gloves if possible.
3e) Everybody cleans different and gives other emphasizes. Hard to accept if you’re a perfectionist, but you have to. Otherwise you’ll be nuts at the end.
3f) Take use of calm days with a few changing families to clean the mobile well (corners, traces of lime etc). It gives you the reserve to clean a bit quicker on busy days and still have a good result for the guests.
3g) The montage and demontage is from time to time very hard, psychologically seen. The camping is totally empty, nothing open or to do, nobody there. If you have bad luck it’s also bad weather. But it’s worth surviving the montage periode and remember the good memories during the demontage. Start the (de)montage with checking if all the fridges are open (make sure they stay open, there will be mold in a few days!) and put chlorin and the toiletbrush in the toilet.
3h) If you’re company doesn’t have a high pressure cleaner, make friends with collegues of other companies who have. Or buy one yourself together, they aren’t that expensive (60 euros) and they save you a lot of time. Even a simple hose (10 euros) saves you already time. Wash the whites (outside furniture) first with soap and a sponge and put then water on it.
- Problems are to be solved by swapping them around. If mobile 1 is missing something or something is broken, you take it from mobile 2. Until there’s no empty mobile left and you can’t solve it anymore. And yes, unfortunately the guest with the biggest mouth gets most what he wants…
4a) Remember that 99% of the complaints and the frustrations of the guests are simply due to expectations that not have been fulfilled. Google “ServQual” to know more about it. That makes it so much easier to handle it and not taking it personal.
4b) Complaints are handled by
- listening well- showing (real) compassion (“I understand that…” , “I feel very sorry that…” etc)
- analysing and breakig the complaint in pieces.
- solving every part of the problem. Always try to give a solution or an alternative.
- checking at the end (or a day later) if everything is (still) okay.
4c) Magic phrases while handling complaints
- “What do you expect me to do” in a kind way of course
- “I hope you have seen that I’ve done everything I could”. People see and understand that you cannot change the things that can’t be changed.
4d) It’s surprising to see what some guests make problems about, It seems futile for you, but it’s very important for them. It’s even more surprising what some guests accept without complaining (but be aware: you never know what they tell their friends or on the social media or whether they are going to complain officialy afterwards).
4e) Keep a logbook of complaints and maintenance jobs. By collecting statistics, it’s easier to convince your boss or the camping to solve (really) a certain problem.
-
Guestrounds are nice to do. Do them always and at the proper time (before everybody is still at the beach), if not, the guestround after will be much more difficult and longer because the questions and problems accumulate.
-
Living in a tent is not always easy. No water, no toilet. It can be cold (buy thermounderwear like Craft or Odlo for the nights) and the tent can leak.
-
You’re never off unless you leave the campsite. It can happen that the guest wants to make an checkout appointment when you’re in the shower or want a boiler to be fixed at saturdayevening 11pm.
-
People (clients, collegues and couriers from other companies) come and go. Don’t get too attached and above all don’t fall in love
-
The salary is not that high but enough. Calculate what you would earn when you deduce the rent of your house. When comparing companies don’t forget to keep in mind that there are differences in secundary benifits like (health) assurance, travel paid etc
-
Be prepared that when you come back at home, your world and view on things have been changed but theirs didn’t.
-
If you have the smallest possibility to take a car, come with the car. Most campsites are in the middle of nowhere and if not, difficult reachable with public
transport, especially in evening and weekends. You’ll have also a lot of friends because you’ll be the one to drive to the supermarket -
On http://www.campingcourier.com/itscamping.pdf you’ll find a couriermanual. It’s a bit negative of voice and too much laid back, but still a niceand informative thing to read
-
When packing take clothes, towels etc that can be thrown away. You’ll buy stuff during the period and like this you won’t have overweight when returning home. If you play guitar or another instrument take it with you. If there’s no space, at least take tablatures or sheetmusic of your favorite songs with you, there’s always a possibility to play!

Have fun, have fun and don’t forget to have fun ! Time flies when having fun!
