Ik heb al redelijk wat berichten gevonden op dit forum over het verzekeren van een camper, maar ik heb toch nog geen antwoord gevonden op mijn vraag. Hopelijk kan iemand mij verder helpen. Eind november gaan mijn vriend en ik voor 6 weken naar Nieuw Zeeland. Wij zijn nu druk op zoek naar een geschikt campertje. We zijn onder andere uitgekomen bij Apollo/Cheapa Campers.
In de voorwaarden van deze organisatie staat dat de huurder te allen tijde aansprakelijk is voor een “single vehicle accident”, een eenzijdig ongeval dus. Ik heb dit nog eens nagevraagd bij een reisorganisatie en die bevestigen inderdaad dat je, ongeacht wat voor verzekeringspakket je neemt, niet verzekerd bent voor schade die je zelf veroorzaakt door bijvoorbeeld een paaltje te raken bij parkeren.
Doordat wij voor het eerst in een camper rijden, lijkt mij de kans op dit soort schade (doordat je de grootte van het voertuig in het begin misschien niet goed inschat) juist het grootst! Kan iemand mij hier meer over vertellen? Is dit bij alle verzekeringen zo?
Dit is inderdaad erg hinderlijk.
Het wordt nog erger.
Gravel roads en die zijn er veel juist op de mooie afgelegen gebieden zijn ook verboden als je daar op rijd is je verzekering niets meer waard. omdat je de verzekeringsvoorwaarden overtreed en daar staat ook niets van in de nederlandse voorwaarden.

Waarom een camper? Met zijn tweetjes kun je veel beter een huurauto nemen en motelletjes afgaan. Zeker in Nieuw Zeeland. Rijd makkelijker, je kunt overal komen en parkeren, slaapt comfortabeler. Na een dag kun je heerlijk in je eigen bad en als je zelf je eten wilt klaarmaken, dan heb je een echte keuken. En vooral: het is goedkoper!
Misschien heb je wat aan ons verhaal. Welliswaar in het Engels, maar spreekt voor zich, denk ik. Wij kwamen in ieder geval bedrogen uit met een volledige verzekering…
Warning about Apollo Campervan rental
We’ve rented an Apollo Campervan in New-Zealand, for 4 weeks, travelling from Auckland to Christchurch in November.
Unfortunately, we had some damage at our roof of the campervan. We are very decent drivers, not having accidents at all and almost never have traffic fines. But, sometimes shit happens…so, you have to pay for the damage. That’s the fact. But listen to what Apollo does to you when this happens to you:
They take $2820 (€1665) from you, including administration costs. But….
In New Zealand we visited 3 garages, 2 specialized in campervans and one in collision damage, and showed them the damage.
2 out of 3 garages gave us an offer how much the reparation of the roof would cost.
The first two garages estimated the costs on $1500. The third garage made a complete offer of $1656.
On this, we kindly requested Apollo you to send us your offer of your garage before the campervan would be repaired or costs will be charged to us. You can imagine that we won’t accept higher costs than these 3 experts have told us. At the end lower costs are to everyone’s benefit. But Apollo would not cooperate on this. They just send you a much much higher bill! Then we requested, since we are not trying to avoid our responsibility, that we would accept a $1656 invoice (more than the lowest offer of $1500). But again they did not cooperate. So we had to pay $1100 more then necessary!!
Please take in consideration that:
Not any scratch at all (except the roof) was on the campervan when we handed it in in Christchurch.
We checkt the oil every 500 km.
We cleaned the campervan every day from the inside and also sometimes the outside.
We understand that damage to the roof is not covered by any insurance, however not a single dollar being covered by our All In insurance is very unpleasant.
Took us a lot of time e-mailing (almost 2 months!!) before we finally received a photo of the repaired campervan and a correct invoice (the date on the first invoice was before the accident happened, isn’t that strange?).
This took us almost 2 months of discussing with Apollo. Though they keep very friendly, they just ask to much money for this and want to earn money as it seems. Please, be warned when you rent with Apollo! We advise you to ask offers at several garages/damage repair companies and solve the problem during your stay in New-Zealand and not at home. Or better, do not rent at Apollo’s but another company which DOESN’T WANT TO EARN ON YOUR DAMMAGE LIKE APOLLO (or in Dutch: boek niet bij Apollo maar bij een bedrijf die je geen poot uit willen draaien en willen profiteren van de schade die je onopzettelijk hebt aangebracht)!
In addition to this information we would like to inform you about:
When we left in Auckland, there was no fuel in the car, as promised in your ‘summary of rental conditions’. Despite Apollo had mentioned it was full at the form. We had to drive back!
There was no welcome pack in the campervan, as promised in Apollos’ ‘summary of rental conditions’.
There were no maps in the campervan, as promised in Apollos’ ‘summary of rental conditions’.
We really missed some guidelines of the camper. Of course we looked at the instruction video carefully, but we like to inform you that this video doesn’t contain all necessary information during the trip, especially when you travel several weeks.
Apollo promised we would have a 10% discount at several camp sites. This is not true! We never had the discount, so had to pay more as we were promised.

Heerlijk.
Ook wij konden gaan en staan waar we wilden er was overal plek genoeg om te overnachten.
Het prijs verschilde tussen een camper met campings of een huurauto met motels niet zoveel bij ons.
Het is heerlijk als je het naar je zin hebt op vakantie.
Maar wij vinden het prettig om gemakkelijk te toeren in een luxe auto, 's avonds na een heerlijk (bubbel)bad in een normale ruime keuken te kunnen koken en in een goed opgemaakt “Kingsize” bed te stappen dat je 's ochtends zo achterlaat en 's avonds weer “vanzelf” is opgemaakt. Niet te hoeven schoonmaken, stofzuigen, vegen, etc.
