I would like your help with my trip leaving from Tokyo, through Matsumoto, kamocochi, takayama, shirawaka-go and kanzawa( unsure of the spellings!). Give number of nights each place for optimal pleasure. We would also like a trip on the limited wide express train through the mountains. We have 6 whole days, the last we have to be back in Tokyo.
Thanks for all your help
Kanazawa two days and a day each for the other destinations. It is recommended to plan your travel to include the morning markets in Takayama which are highly recommended. You could visit the markets the next morning of your stay in Takayama and then proceed to Shirakawa-Go. Kanazawa has great sushi for reasonable prices, even the conveyor belt sushi is really good.
How much of the previous day do i need for my stay in Takayama? Kan I leave luggage anywhere if I visit Shirakawa-ga? If I have one night at Matsumoto do you recommend a trip[ with the train? Should I stay at Kamicochi for a night or use Matsumoto as my base?
Kanazawa for 2 nights, then there must be a lot to see?
Thanks for the help
This is how I would plan it:
D1 Tokyo-Matsumoto
D2 Matsumoto-Kamikochi-Takayama
D3 Takayama
D4 Takayama-Shirakawa-go-Kanazawa (or spend night in Shirakawa-go and go to Kanazawa next morning)
D5 Kanazawa
D6 Kanazawa-return to Tokyo
Kamikochi ( Kamikochi Travel Guide ) you can visit on your way from Matsumoto to Takayama. Leave early in the morning, hike around for a few hours and then go on to Takayama to spend the night. There are coin lockers in Kamikochi to store luggage. Alternatively you could spend a night in a lodging in the mountains of Kamikochi and go to Takayama the next morning.
You can store luggage in lockers at the bus stop in Shirakawa-go or book a night in Shirakawa-go, drop off you luggage first and do sight-seeing.
Kanazawa has many sights:
Kenrokuen
Nagamachi (old Samurai housing district)
Chaya districts (tea house districts)
Kanazawa castle grounds
Omicho (sea food market)
Ninja temple
The central shopping area is really pleasant too, if you like shopping.
I have not been to the ninja temple and castle grounds, but all the other sights were great.
This looks good. I think if we would like to take the train trip through the alps, kiso valley, then another day in Matsumoto would be the oplossing? Have you ever taken the limited express train? Is the kiso valley a nice area?
Good tips in previous answer. Do you have a good tip for sleeping in Takayama or kanazawa? Is Kanazawa really that good for it’s Sushi?:cheer:
I haven’t been to Kiso valley yet, but it’s definitely on my to visit list for a future trip and I’ve heard only nice things. An option is
to squeeze Takayama and Shirakawa-go into one day to make room for
Kiso valley and add a day to Matsumoto sticking to the six days.
Takayama was a long time ago and I don’t remember which hotel it was.
In Kanazawa I stayed last year at a really cheap but decent hotel http://bit.ly/hSdIXh
It’s in a central location and you can walk to some of the sights, but
I regretted not getting a hotel near the station, because you have to
move around using buses which meant taking two buses to get to the
station after a day of sightseeing to pick up luggage on the way from
the hotel. And they only had free internet access on a computer in the
lobby, where you had to stand because there was no room for a chair. I recommend to get a hotel near the station for a little bit more convenience. Some cheap options: http://bit.ly/f5FdLV
Sushi and sashimi in Kanazawa is considered by many as higher quality
than Tokyo. The main reason is that the fish caught in the Sea of
Japan is regarded as better.
The huge oysters sold at Omicho market were delicious too. You pick
one and they’ll open it on the spot.
There also is a locally eaten delicious fish called Nodoguro (meaning
black throat because throat is black), you pay for the size of the
fish. It’s usually grilled or fried. It’s not caught in other parts of
Japan because it lives deeper in the sea than other fish.
I can do 2 nights Matsumoto, 2 nights Takayama en 2 nights Kanazawa!
Getting back on the last day for a night in Tokyo before our trip home.
Goed plan en veel plezier!
