Betogingen Thailand & SITUATIE BANGKOK !!

PM gives ultimatum to reds

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship has left everyone in confusion after being pressed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for the exact date on which it will lift its rally to oust the government.

Key red shirt leaders Veera Musikhapong, Natthawut Saikua and Chatuporn Prompan cancelled a press conference and held an urgent meeting yesterday to counter the fresh demand by the prime minister.

After three hours of talks, Mr Chatuporn said the UDD could not come up with a common position. More talks were needed before a final decision.

Mr Abhisit gave the UDD until today to give an exact timeframe for the end of its rallies which have paralysed parts of the inner city. He also accused former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of standing in the way of efforts to end political rifts.

The red shirts have agreed in principle to join the reconciliation process unveiled by Mr Abhisit last Monday . The prime minister’s plan to end political divisions could pave the way for elections on Nov 14.

The UDD has yet to say when it will ask demonstrators to lift their occupation of the shopping and business district in Ratchaprasong.

Shooting and grenade attacks on Friday night and Saturday morning worry the prime minister.

He suggested yesterday the attacks were the work of “terrorists” who did not want to the rallies to end, as they face the threat of legal action and criminal charges once the reds go home.

That worry prompted Mr Abhisit to demand the UDD give him an answer by today.

Any delay would put the safety of the public, officials and demonstrators at risk as opponents of the road map proposal could strike again, he said.

“We need an answer so we can move forward,” he said in his weekly address to the country.

The prime minister also made clear that dispersing the demonstration on May 15 as the UDD has proposed would be “too late” given the dangers posed.

Mr Abhisit said he would shelve his proposed elections if the rallies continue.

Politicians also need guarantees they will be safe on the election campaign trail, he said.

“If all points in the reconciliation plan are achieved, I can say the government will be ready for the elections on Nov 14. If not, the elections will not take place,” he said.

The prime minister also accused his political rival, Thaksin, of standing in the way of the government’s reconciliation efforts.

Mr Abhisit is soliciting support for his five-point reconciliation plan. But Thaksin, he said, was one of the obstacles.

“Mr Thaksin is not satisfied with the reconciliation plan because it is not the answer to Mr Thaksin’s personal interests in court cases and other matters,” he said.

Thaksin was sentenced to two years jail in absentia by the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions in 2008 for abusing his authority in the Ratchadaphisek land deal in 2003.

His wife at the time, Potjaman na Pombejra, clinched the deal while Thaksin was in power.

In February, the court ordered the seizure of 46 billion baht in assets belonging to Thaksin and his immediate family after ruling that a portion of the fortune was derived from policy corruption during his tenure as prime minister.

Mr Natthawut said Mr Abhisit’s attack on Thaksin could spoil the atmosphere as the red shirts and the government worked on how to solve the political crisis. He should not have made the comments, the UDD leader said.

Thaksin did not react to Mr Abhisit’s attack yesterday. He said on Twitter that he was in Saudi Arabia on a rice trade mission.

Behoorlijk heftig allemaal. We vertrekken vrijdag richting Bangkok.

UDD unveils ‘red map’

The anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) has come up with its own version of the reconciliation plan known as the ‘red map’ to respond to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s five-point road map to end the political stand-off.

The UDD leaders met late Monday afternoon to discuss Mr Abhisit’s reconciliation plan and his demand for an end to the prolonged anti-government rally in Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong business district.

The meeting ended about 5pm. The UDD leaders announced they were “happy” with the result and their own “red map” reconciliation plan.

They said the their “red map” will be proposed to the government for consideration. No details were given during the initial anouncement.

Prime Minister’s Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey said earlier the government will take legal action if the UDD leaders remain undecided when to end their protest rally.

Mr Sathit said if the UDD came up with a clear response today it would be raised for consideration at tomorrow’s cabinet meeting, which would be held at Government House not the 11th Infantry Regiment headquarters.
By 6pm, there was no indication of an agreement

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, in his Sunday television programme “Confidence in Thailand with PM Abhisit” issued an ultimatum to UDD leaders, to come up with a decision on Monday when to end the rally or face government action.

He said the government could not afford to wait any longer because the prolonged rally would only cause more damage.

However, one of the UDD leaders Jatuporn Prompan vowed on Monday to fight on until justice is served for those who were killed and injured in clashes between troops and protesters last month.

“I don’t care about who wants it [rally] to end, but I won’t,” he said before a meeting with other protest leaders to discuss their position after Prime minister Abhisit pressed them for an exact date on which they will lift their rallies.

“If authorities still are not pursuing these cases. For me, I would prefer death,” Mr Jatuporn said.

Red-shirt leaders do not want amnesty for themselves, but they want a single standard applied to all, he said.

Mr Jatuporn said he also would like to ask society if they want to see cases relating to the UDD be treated as special cases, while cases against the government or anti-UDD groups are put on hold.

He then slammed Mr Abhisit’s reconciliation road map, saying that it was no more than a tool to manipulate society to put pressure on the UDD to end the rally.

UDD core member Kwanchai Praipana said the group could not reach a decision when to end the rally because secret negotiations with government representatives had run into stumbling blocks.

The leader of the red shirts of Udon Thani said the UDD had in fact finished its own road map for reconciliation to be proposed to the government.

However, UDD leaders, in a tense meeting on Sunday night, could not agree when to end the rally at Ratchapasong intersection because during their secret talks with government representatives the government did not agree to the release of all 24 UDD leaders on bail after being charged with illegal assembly in violation of the emergency decree.

"The government did not want four of us to be granted bail. The four are myself, Suporn Atthawong, Arisman Pongruangrong and Pol Lt-Col Waipot Apornrat.

“This is not fair. We should get the same treatment,” Mr Kwanchai told supporters from the Ratchaprasong protest stage.

Mr Kwanchai also said the government representatives also turned down the UDD’s call for legal action against Prime Minister Abhisit and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, in his capacity as director of the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES), for ordering the crackdown on April 10.

“Mr Abhisit does not want to enter the justice process. This is not acceptable to most of the UDD core members,” Mr Kwanchai said.

The Udon red-shirt leader said Mr Abhisit lacked sincerity in proposing the roadmap, which was far from being concrete. UDD leaders would have to think carefully because the government had not said clearly when it would dissolve the House of Representatives.

“We need to ask the people whether our proposal to be submitted to the government is acceptable to them. Also, we don’t know yet if it would be acceptable to the government,” he said.

Mr Kwanchai said Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep had not only denied responsibility for the deaths and injuries to the protesters but also accused UDD leaders of being terrorists.

Rally to end ‘when Suthep charged’

Online news: Breakingnews

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship on Monday announced it would end the rally at the Ratchaprasong intersection once Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban surrenders to fight the charges of ordering the crackdown on the red-shirt protesters on April 10.

The crackdown resulted in 25 people killed, including five soldiers, and more than 800 others wounded.

The UDD called for police to issue a warrant for Mr Suthep’s arrest in connection with the crackdown.

Shortly after the UDD made this announcement, acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said Mr Suthep, in his capacity as director of the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES), would report to the Department of Special Investigation tomorrow, May 11, to hear the charges to be filed against him.

The UDD stopped short of seeking legal action against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, saying that he is protected by the immunity of being a parliamentarian.

Mr Suthep resigned as MP following after the National Counter Corruption Commission ruled that he had violated the constitution by holding shares in businesses linked to the government.

Once Mr Suthep surrendered, the rally at the Ratchaprasong intersection would end, the UDD said.

The UDD said it had no objection to the prime minister’s proposed election date for Nov 14 and House dissolution during the second half of September.

However, it called for the government to end its practice of employing double-standards and to allow its mouthpiece, the People Channel, to go on air as usual.

In the latest development, the UDD said it would not be acceptable to the red shirts if Mr Suthep surrendered to the DSI. It demanded that Mr Suthep surrendered to police only.
