Hi everyone,
in english, to get the most out of this post (you can reply in dutch too):
I am new on the forum, with a special big question for a special friend, his name is Ali and he lives in Mtwapa, close to Mombasa, on the Kenian coast. We met him when we were there a year and a half ago and we hung out together, he took us on a great boat trip and a tour around his neighbourhood. He tries to make a living doing this kind of ‘tourist guide’ work, but it’s hard with the big bosses from the resorts getting in his way. They tell bad stories about him and have their own contacts for tours and safaris etc. The usual powerplay keeping everyone at bay and in place.
Now it is also rain season so there is even less work in tourism, and an agent has come to his town telling him and his friends they can get a job in Dubai…
For this he needs money to get a passport, visum and do a bloodtest in Nairobi. This is why he wrote me, to help him with this “big chance”.
Unfortunately, it is rather a trap than a chance if he goes to Dubai…
Now… To cut a long story short, I got the money together, writing a mail to all my friends everyone made a donation, but then I got the bad news about the situation in Dubai. I am very uninformed and naive so it seems: it is horrible what happens if you go to dubai as an immigrant worker. They take your passport, pay you only a quarter of what they promised (they promise him 400 euro a month), you have to stay to pay off the ticket for the flight, it takes you years, you work long days etc.
Well, silly me.
Anyway, here is my real question (that i also asked him, but i need more information from more angles): what ELSE could he do to build a life, preferably in his hometown… Something that he can use this money for, as a one time investment, that will get him started, so he can make some kind of living in relative independance.
It’s a hard question I know. But any information, or where to get this information, is very welcome. Organisations, first hand information, anything. To get him started, with the money we can send him.
Something that he can own and build upon, together with his friends and family. The only thing I could think of was he could buy a fishing boat…
Thanks for any creative input you can give me!
