Mtwapa: Where the party never ends
The scramble between Mombasa and Kilifi counties over the little town of Mtwapa is not without reason.
It is the place where the night is turned into day and people go to sleep in the daylight.
During the day, one sees a combination of rusty buildings and impressive modern buildings, hotels and very few people.
But nightfall brings with it a sea of humanity and a buzz of activities in the many bars, hotels and night clubs that litter the town.
It is the destination for booze, sex and bliss for the nocturnally oriented.
It is a small town – the size of Githurai in Nairobi - where bars are more than shops, about 300 of them.
They are always full with revellers till morning. Here, Mututho laws are unknown as nothing closes after 11 pm.
Patrons come from as far as Mombasa, Kilifi and Malindi to enjoy the night.
Even big businesses including Tuskys and Nakumatt chain of stores have targeted Mtwapa. Land, targeted by potential businessmen sells for gold.
It is frequented by tourists, mainly Germans, Swiss and Italians plus local tourists out for nightlife. Sex workers hover all over openly looking for clients.
And they are aggressive as soon as a man enters any pub. They compete too. “You want good time! Am available right away!” says one
“ Take me, I know good sex, you want everything….!” says another.
Once you take your pick, the party begins with boozing. She would summon two or so friends to join the party. “These are my sisters!” she would tell an unspecting tourist whose dollars would start flowing like River Nile.
The last session would come several hours later when they retire to the hotel for real business – sex. For Mtwapa, it follows that big money change hands bringing with it businesses that pay tax to both central and the county government.
Situated at the southern tip of Kilifi county, the controversy of where it belongs was sparked by a private tour firm’s map which showed it to be in Mombasa county.
Mr Julius Kamau who owns Lambada Club says the business people who have invested heavily in Mtwapa are not bothered by the controversy.
According to Mr Kamau, the town rightfully belongs to Kilifi County and they would be happy to get services from there.
Both counties know the financial benefits from Mtwapa and each would like to have a piece of the cake in their kitty.
Kilifi people protested and the offending map has been withdrawn .Local Government minister Musalia Mudavadi confirms that Mtwapa belongs to Kilifi county and the map will not be re-drawn to favour Mombasa.
Dus, KENYA… hoe ist met de party’s ? :dag:
