Tsanga-tsainy (hoisting of teh royal mast) is the greatest feast for the Antakarana in Diego-Suarez, Madagascar. It is field every five years at Ambatoharanana, 27 km away from Ambilobe.

The Tsanga-tsainy ceremony is held to remember the tribe Antakarana’s origins from the limestone rocks whcih are a providential refuge for those who survive in case of siege and a place of eternal rest for the tribal kings of Diego-Suarez.

Tsanga-tsainy consists of two preliminary phases: Pilgrimage to Nosy Mitso first, in memory of Tsimiharo I who took refuge there during the Merina annexation in 1838. Then comes the visit to the sacred caves where the first kings lie.

The ceremony consists in hoisting a mast and flying a white flag with a six branch star and a red crescent on it. This gesture started in 1697 with King Andriantsirotso.

Then two bisexual trunks surrounded with a silver chain are cut down after the land and ancestors are invoked. Numerical 2 and all even numbers symbolize life, union and continuity.

During the event, two groups of dancers feign war known as rebika, a conflict which opposed two southern dynasties: the Zafinimena (gold lineage), and the Zafinifotsy (silver lineage).

Royal members pour drinks for the ancestors onto the mast. As the mast is carried, women walk in front of their husbands. The men follow to protect the women. The mast is carried on the shoulders, barefoot, over 54 km to Ampasimbe where it is shaped as sacred drums roll.

Tsanga-tsainy lasts ten days. To participate, men must wear a loincloth. Women will let their plaits loose. Hats and shoes are prohibited.

Dank voor de uitleg. Had ook al het een en ander gelezen in de Trotter, maar wat ik wou trachten te weten komen was een exacte datum.

Hoi Dani,

Geen idee wanneer het precies is. Ik kon er ook niet meer over vinden dat wat ik had gekopieerd van het internet. En het is maar 1x in de vijf jaar. De mensen lopen dus meer dan 50 km zonder schoenen. Dat zou ik niet trekken met mijn Europeesche zachte voetjes.
