South Africa! The first days!

Hello Everybody!

I’ve decided to write my weblog in english as this makes it easier for none dutch speakers to read my blog. And most of us dutch people speak English anyway.

I have safely arrived in South Africa and have had my first days at Umthombo. What a amazing country and project, I already like it a lot!!

But first things first.

I had a total of 3 flights planned.

Amsterdam - Heathrow:

It immediately started off very interesting.
After I provided the British airways staff my boarding card I took a seat to write in my diary. (thanks mam and sis!)
I heard a bit off stuffle in the background and looked up. A older gentleman at that point was asked to put his handluggage in luggage checker.
He clearly didn’t like this as he shoved the bag in and pulled it out so hard the entire baggage checker was thrown through the room.
Both staff had to immediately calm the gentleman down and even the pilot had to address the gentleman. In the end he was allowed to board the plane.

Heathrow - Johannesburg

After meeting my fellow Umthombo volunteer Djuun at terminal 5 in heathrow. Be readied ourselfs to board the plane. All went well.
There were clearly more seats than people so we tried to get seats together. Unfortunately a couple from Durban had booked the seats next to me.
This meant we had to find seats close to Djuun his original seat. A gentleman in the middle path of seats had 4 seats for himself. I asked the gentleman if I could take one of them.
Very negatively this gentleman let me know he was a 'first class traveller and he was offerd 4! seats for himself… I decided I didn’t want to sit 10 hours next to this gentleman and decided to sit 2 rows behind.
Here I met a friendly man from Capetown who informed me a bit more about South Africa. It was a long but good flight, turbelance set aside. There where many films and series for us to enjoy. Slept about 3.5 hours…

Johannesburg - Durban

The last flight to Durban went fairly normal. After a small milkshake we boarded our planes.

I had arrived in South Africa!!
The 30 degrees heat blew me of my feet, or was it the 50 kilometers an hour wind. Probably both…

Waiting for us was Loes the Regional co-ordinator. She made sure we would get to our first hostel.

Blue sky hostel - Hostel 1
A beautifully situated hostel about 100 meters from the beach. (For the people following me on the facebook, this is what I posted the photos off)
Here I met most of the volunteers wo will be working via Be-more in Durban. (So not all with Umthombo.) (If any of you are reading this: GOODLUCK guys! :))
This is also where I met the third great volunteer for Umthombo: Martijn.

Tekweni hostel - Hostel 2
This is the second hostel. Here I will be living for the next 2 months!
A very open and friendly hostel. Well protected in a great area.
We 3 + 1 english volunteer have our own appartment here. Photos will follow when we have cleaned up hehe

Umthombo
The day before yesterday we had our first day at Umthombo. What a beautiful project!
It’s great to see the children enjoy themselfs instead of being on the street.
I will go in more detail when I have experienced more days with Umthombo. This is to give you all the right idea.

Funny thing of the day:
After watching the guys play football we headed home. On the way there a young girl threw herself on me. I am not really sure what her intentions where but the boys immediately helped me hahaha.

I will update soon again! I am leaving for Drakensberg and Lesotho now!

Thanks everyone for their nice reply’s!

Greetz!!

Danny
