KWALE county Tourism executive Adan Sheikh has urged the national government to hasten tarmacking of the Samburu-Kinango- Kwale road for tourists to access Diani easily.
He said the road is in good condition, but it needs to be tarmacked so tourists from upcountry and Nairobi can avoid the Likoni Channel crossing. Sheikh said they have put up a big sign that directs visitors touring Diani to branch at Samburu and head to Kinango and Kwale towns.
“If the national government can improve the road, our visitors from Nairobi will not delay at the Likoni Channel crossing,” he said. Speaking to the Star on the phone on Thursday, Sheikh said the decision by the Kenya Ferry Service to give tourists’ vehicles priority is good for tourism.
The Kenya Ferry Service last month announced that all tourists’ vehicles from the South Coast and the island will be allowed to pass without queueing to avoid delays. Sheikh, who is also a hotelier in the South Coast, said the Likoni Channel crossing and the Samburu- Kinango-Kwale road are critical for tourism in the South Coast.
“We want to see the Kenya Ferry Service fulfil its promise. That will be a big boost to the South Coast that has suffered a lot due to the delays in the channel crossing,” he said. Hill Park Hotels group operation manager Gorge Mokaya said the priority for tourists’ vehicles at the ferry channel should not be discriminative against black tourists.
“We have seen such cases before. So we want to be assured it will benefit all, as long as they are tourists visiting South Coast. We want to know the criteria to be used to avoid such discrimination,” he said.

Bewijs het maar eens, maar ik geloof het zo! Afgelopen weken ook bijna wekelijks de ferry overgestoken. Weliswaar per voet, maar op verschillende tijdstippen en nooit lang hoeven wachten. Ook mijn bus richting Nairobi was snel over. Wat mij betreft dus ook alleen maar goede ervaringen momenteel!
En dit weekend weer 2 maal de ferry overgegaan. Heen per bus, terug te voet. Beide keren direct de eerste ferry over, dus niet lang hoeven wachten. Wel weer een bijzondere anekdote. Heen weg in de bus, staan we voor de ferry stil. Er komt iemand van de beveiliging binnen en gaat na wat rondkijken lang onderuitgezakt in de stoel van de conductor zitten. Conductor en chauffeur zijn beiden uitgestapt en niet te bekennen. Vervolgens komen ze beiden terug. De beveiliger en de conductor spreken in het Kiswahili met elkaar. Ik versta dit, maar houd mijn mond. De beveiliger:
De blanken mogen blijven zitten, maar de afrikanen moeten uitstappen. (Wij waren met 3 en mijn keniaanse man en kind). Conductor: waarom moeten de afrikanen wel uitstappen, maar mogen de blanken blijven zitten? (Complimenten.voor de conductor dat hij deze vraag stelde en zo toch voor zijn mede-afrikanen opkomt!). Beveiliger: mocht er iets gebeuren met de bus tijdens het op en afrijden en er medische hulp of wat dan ook nodig zijn, dan zijn de blanken verzekerd, want die hebben altijd een verzekering (verkeerde aanname van de beveiliger). Wat er verder buiten nog besproken is weet ik niet. Uiteindelijk stapten er 4 mensen uit de bus en de rest bleef zitten tijdens de overtocht.

FERRIES BREAKING DOWN
Over 300,000 people and 5,000 vehicles use the channel each day, which has overwhelmed the Kenya Ferry Services, with the current five ferries breaking down frequently, resulting in delays.
On Tuesday, tourism stakeholders and business people praised the project, saying it would help boost tourism, which is at its lowest ebb.
“We in the tourism industry believe that the road will unlock the potential of Ukunda and Diani,” said Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) executive officer Sam Ikwaye. He said the bypass would also encourage investors, a number of whom are reluctant to put their money in the area due to transport problems.
Construction of an 11km road in the first phase between Mombasa Port and Miritini, at a cost of Sh11 billion, is over 70 per cent complete, according to KeNHA officials.
FIRST PHASE STARTED
Construction of the first phase started in July last year and was scheduled to be completed in 36 months.
It runs from Mombasa Port’s second container terminal and links the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway at Bonje, near Mazeras.
“The road will help evacuate cargo from the port. There is currently a lot of congestion at Jomvu and Miritini, a problem we are trying to address by creating this link,” Infrastructure Principal Secretary John Musonik said in a recent interview.
The Dongo Kundu road, also referred to as the Southern bypass, is seen as the solution to the perennial problem of congestion at Likoni Ferry, which is blamed for underdevelopment of the South Coast.
Phase two of the project is 8.9km between Mwache Junction and Mteza, while phase three is 6.9km between Mteza and Kibundani, linking the highway with the Likoni-Lunga Lunga Road.
“Bidders should deposit a security of an unconditional bank guarantee of Sh200 million for phase two of the project, and Sh50 million for the third phase,” KeNHA said in the notice published in MyGov Weekly newspaper.
“There will be a site visit and pre-bid meeting on June 14 at the KeNHA regional offices,” the authority said in the notice.

A sightseeing bay will also be constructed and at least 88 hectares of mangroves will be replanted, according to the notice.
