Football match and speech day

Hello everyone,

This was an exciting week. On Wednesday my football team played an ‘official’ match against the team of the other school; and on Thursday it was Speechday – that is the final day of school before the holidays.

But to start at the most important event: the football match. Tuesday morning and afternoon training sessions were planned to see who would be selected for the team. I was very fortunate, as the man who sometimes gives football training for the adults (I joined that training a couple of times) happened to herd his cattle on the football field the moment I was there for selecting the best players.

I asked whether he wanted to help me and gladly he accepted. The morning session ended with a test match against a team of guys that happened to be in the neighborhood. My team won 3 -1; and everyone felt happy and confident.

However the afternoon session was completely the opposite. It started with a heavy shower making everyone sliding over the field as some lost sea lions. But worse than that; due to some miscommunication the opposing team thought the real match was on Tuesday. So the whole school was there. In the pooring rain I agreed on a test match which my team lost; with no chance. End score, something like 0 – 5. My team felt depressed and I was angry because of the stupid miscommunication. I had clearly agreed on Wednesday !!!

However, no worries. The REAL match still would be held on Wednesday. In the morning I went to help build a house, but at 14:30 hours I was back on the field and everyone was there! The man that helped me Tuesday morning; all pupils and teachers of both schools and many, many others out of the community.

Lieke (who plays football herself) had brought shirts, so the team looked great. The sun was there. The spectators were there. So after a solid warming up the match could start.

The end score was 2 – 2; and I thing that was a fair representation of what had happened in the field. It was a great event, with all the drama that belongs to a great game.

Thursday was Speechday. As the name already reveals: it was a day of speeches (even I got my 5 minutes of fame), but luckily also a lot of singing and dancing. It is such a nice experience to feel the positive vibe of a community sharing their commitment to improve their quality of life.

Attached a few pictures, which (hopefully) give an impression.
