Dragoman or Alone: The Question

Hello everyone,
I’m thinking of doing the following Dragoman tour:
http://www.dragoman.com/destinations/tripdetails.php?cat=LQR&a

From Quito to Rio de Janeiro in 11 weeks.

The benefits of such a tour are, in my view, the possibilities of getting to remote locations were public transport doesn’t get. Visit remote nature, camp along the way. Also, you don’t have to wait hours for the next bus because you basically have your own transportation ready so you can see more in less time.

Having said that, i think you experience (not see more) of the country and the people if you do travel with public transport and have to arrange your own accommodation. That is something you wont get in your own “bubble”.
But i am afraid you will see less of the remote nature locations when traveling with public transportation.

Last year i was one week in Yellowstone National Park (3 weeks journey to the USA) and it would have been impossible without a rental car or travel company (we had a car). So while you get to see parts of the USA with public transport, you wont get into the National Parks and remote area’s. Something i definitely want to do!

I am afraid the same thing goes with South-America.
What do you think? Is the same kind of tour doable on your own?

(I don’t speak Spanish, not -yet- one word…).

Thank you.

Hey there!

I have already booked that trip, but visa versa, from Rio to Quito,
starting February 2010.
I had kind of the same questions. Anyone who has experience with
travelling with Dragoman through South America?

Thanks.
