Betogingen Thailand & SITUATIE BANGKOK !!

Read the hundreds of posts on dragon’s latest situation thread. Thousands injured duing the past few weeks dozens dead in the past few days, fires being set all over the city and sporadic fighting still happening at some locations. Dragon has told people dozens of times that nowhere in Bangkok is safe. How many times can he give you the same message. Its a war zone and there is no safe area, more so now than ever. That’s why Bangkok is under curfew. Ring the hotel yourself - if no one answers the phone chances are its closed (many are).
If your children do travel to bangkok against FCO advice then chances are their travel insurance will be invalidated so if they are hit by a rogue bullet or grenade they will be thousands of pounds out of pocket for medical costs. Tell them to listen to Dragon’s advice and go somewhere else.

**Hundreds of comments and eulogies have been written and posted at Pantip.com and on Facebook since last night’s arson attack on Siam Theatre, as film fans and Bangkok residents share their memories and sadness at the burning of one of Bangkok’s oldest cinemas. **

Siam Theatre was one of only a few standalone cinemas in town. It was much more than just a theatre, holding many memories for film lovers since opening its doors 44 years ago.

ā€œThe first film screened at Siam Theatre was ā€œBattle of the Bulgeā€ aka ā€œRot Thung Prajan Banā€. I went to see it 44 years ago and sat in the front row as that’s where the cheapest seats were - a ticket cost just Bt7,ā€ says well known architect Yodyium Theptaranon on Facebook.

ā€œI remember the fun I had watching ā€˜Jurassic Park’ with my gang,ā€ writes ā€œDon’t care never die.ā€

ā€œI never knew how much the theatre meant to me until yesterday. I cried. Hope the place will be back soon, I’ll wait for you,ā€ says ā€œRanmachan.ā€

ā€œSiam and Lido theatres are the venues where I can watch movies alone and not feel lonely. I trust the staff in their yellow suits who take care of us very well. My tears fell when I watched the news and I thought of the staff and the uncle in yellow. I am sure they feel sad like us,ā€ says ā€œSao Na sasiā€ at Chalermthai.

ā€œEven though I’ve only watched movies at Lido and Scala, I think the atmosphere is the same. Siam Theatre is a symbol, a meeting place. It’s a place where there are a lot of memories. I cried when watching the news. Can you get anything by burning these places except more conflict?ā€ writes ā€œkokoro_kimā€.

The 800-seat Siam theatre opened on December 15, 1966 with the film ā€œBattle of the Bulgeā€ (ā€œRot Thung Prajan Banā€) starring Henry Fonda and Robert Shaw. It was the first place in Thailand to boast an escalator.

The nearby Lido Theatre opened two years later on June 27, 1968, premiering with the Western ā€œGuns for San Sebastianā€ (ā€œSuek Sebastianā€) starring Anthony Quinn. The 1,000 seat Scala theatre opened the following year, on December 31, 1969.

Originally to be called Chula, the name was changed to Siam following strong opposition from critics who felt it inappropriate to give a cinema the same name as a monarch.

The three cinemas under the APEX chain have been popular for decades.

While Scala is where Hollywood blockbusters are generally screened, Siam has long been the theatre of choice for Thai films, among them MC Chatreechalerm Yukol’s ā€œKhon Liang Changā€ (ā€œThe Elephant Keeperā€) and the acclaimed film noir by Manop Udomdej, ā€œKaloke Bang Tai Chai Kaloke Na Tai Kornā€ (ā€œThe Dumb Die Fast, The Smart Die Slowā€).

Following a fire at Lido cinema in 1993 and its reconstruction and remodelling as a three theatre multiplex, the Apex chain has adapted to current trends, showing both blockbusters and alternative movies, including festival winners, Asian films and Thai independent films. The advantages include longer screening periods, warm and welcoming staff and cheaper tickets.

Siam Theatre and the surrounding area are up for demolition next year by the landowner Chulalongkorn University. According to the master plan, it will be replaced be a modern shopping complex.

Briton in Red Shirt demonstration regrets video arson gibe**

Richard Lloyd Parry, Bangkok

BANGKOK: – A British Red Shirt who was shown on YouTube promising to burn down a Bangkok shopping centre has expressed regret for his words and insisted that he had nothing to do with the arson attack that destroyed the luxury mall four days later.

Jeff Savage, of Tonbridge in Kent, said that his outburst, which has caused outrage among Thai internet users, was sarcastic and came at a moment of frustration because of the imminent suppression of the Red Shirt demonstrators by the Thai Army.

ā€œI hold my hands up — it was me, and I’m ashamed that I lost my temper,ā€ he told The Times by telephone from his home in the Thai resort town of Pattaya. ā€œI was tired and emotional and full of steroids. I said we’re going to burn down Central — I was being sarcastic.ā€

The 74-second video was removed from YouTube by the young American man who filmed Mr Savage, 48, on Saturday as he walked down a street occupied by the anti-Government Red Shirt protesters. It showed him dressed in the black clothes of the protest movement’s guards and brandishing a stick which he throws down in anger.

Amid much swearing he is heard to say: ā€œWe’re going to burn down Central World,ā€ and threatening to loot gold and jewellery from the shopping centre. To Mr Savage’s embarrassment, Central World was burnt down by a mob on Wednesday, after Red Shirt leaders handed themselves in to Thai police and called off their protests.

He insisted that he had played no part in the mayhem, and that at the time he was watching — although not taking part in — another arson attack on a Thai television station. But he defended the destruction of property as a weapon in the ā€œclass warā€ which he believes the Red Shirts are fighting.

ā€œI was not involved [in either arson attack], it was far too dangerous,ā€ he said. ā€œBut from what I heard it was some of the guards which did it to Central. I heard rumours that it was planned and that stuff had been put inside — gas canisters and stuff. It didn’t just go off because someone put a lighter to it.ā€

An Australian man has stood up and given speeches at Red Shirt rallies but Mr Savage is the only Briton known to be an active member of the movement. He said: ā€œI don’t mind if they knock on my door and throw me out of the country. But I would be disappointed to end up in a Thai jail.ā€
