The red shirts were not satisfied with their leadersâ decision to surrender and end their rally. They set fire on various spots around the rally site, according to television reports.
While a number of their leaders surrendered to the Royal Thai Police Office, noises of explosions were heard many times near the main rally stage.
Billows of smoke were seen blowing out from in front of the Central World department store.
Some of the protesters smashed glass panes around the department stores while others threw fire bombs into the first floor of the building.
At the Sala Daeng intersection, the protesters destroyed telephone booths, advertisement signs, traffic signs, and others.

Old Udon city hall set on fire

The red-shirts who broke into the compound of the city hall in Udon Thani on Wednesday set fire to an old building inside the grounds, a television report said.
The fire quickly razed the wooden building, which was the old city hall and still in use.
Earlier on Wednesday, about 5,000 red-shirts stormed the city hall to show dissatisfaction with the governmentâs use of force to break up the protest in Bangkok, and demanded a House dissolution.

Red leaders surrender

Seven red-shirt leaders surrendered to police at the Royal Thai Police headquarters about 1.30pm on Wednesday.
They are Jatuporn Prompan, Natthawut Saikua, Weng Tojirakarn, Wiphuthalaeeng Pattanaphumthai, Korkaew Phikulthong, Yosvaris Chuklom and Nisit Sinthuprai.
Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan announced from the stage at 1.15pm that that he and other leaders would surrender to prevent further losses.
âI apologise to you all but I donât want any more losses. I am devastated too. We will surrender,â he said.
He also announced the ending of the anti-government protest.
Shortly before the announcement, opposition chief whip Witthaya Buranasiri said seven leaders of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) will surrender to police on Wednesday afternoon.
Senator Lertrat Ratanavanich said earlier that UDD leader and Puea Thai Party MP Jatuporn had contacted the opposition chief whip and said he wanted to surrender to the police at 1.30pm today.
He said a group of Puea Thai MPs would go to the Royal Thai Police headquarters to witness the surrender.
âI believe other UDD core members, besides Mr Jatuporn, will turn themselves in to the police as well,â he added.
However, thousands of red shirts in Khon Kaen and Udon Thani refused to give in and raided the city halls to show dissatisfaction over the governmentâs crackdown on UDD protesters in Bangkok, according to television reports.
In Khon Kaen, more than 1,000 red shirts broke through a cordon of police and administrative officials at the main gate of the city hall.
They brought with them car tyres and fuel and threatened to set fire on the city hall if the government did not respond to their demand for it to dissolve the House of Representatives.
In Udon Thani, more than 5,000 red shirts broke through barricades and a cordon of police, soldiers, and volunteers and entered the city hall.

Even terzijde , nogmaals het is voor ons maar een vakantie.
Toch maak ik me ernstige zorgen om de toeristen.

**Thais leger valt kamp roodhemden binnen **
BANGKOK - Het Thaise leger is woensdag met gepantserde wagens het kampement van de zogeheten roodhemden in het zakencentrum van Bangkok binnengevallen. Doel van de actie is het kordon rond het kamp met oppositionele betogers te verstevigen, zo maakte de minister van Defensie bekend. Zeker vijf personen, onder wie een Italiaanse journalist, zijn om het leven gekomen.

Meer dan vijftig mensen zouden gewond zijn geraakt. De Italiaanse verslaggever zou in de buik zijn geraakt, waarna hij naar een ziekenhuis werd gebracht. Hij was echter al overleden voordat hij daar arriveerde.
In alle vroegte verzamelden de troepen zich nabij het kamp van de roodhemden. Een tv-station in Thailand heeft beelden getoond van vier leiders van de protestbeweging die door de politie in hechtenis zijn genomen. âIk roep iedereen op naar huis te gaanâ, zei Nattawut Saikuar, het gezicht van de âdoodshemdenâ, in een interview.
Saikuar en drie andere leidinggevenden van de antiregeringsbeweging zitten vast op het hoofdkantoor van de politie in de hoofdstad Bangkok. Saikuar riep zijn aanhangers op zich te begeven naar een plaats waar bussen staan, waarmee ze de hoofdstad kunnen verlaten.
Volgens het leger is de situatie in Bangkok inmiddels onder controle. De operatie tegen de betogers, die zich wekenlang hadden verschanst in een uitgestrekt kampement in het centrum van de miljoenenstad, is inmiddels opgeschort. Thai armored vehicles rammed through barricades and soldiers stormed into the protest zone on Wednesday morning in a definitive move against demonstrators who have occupied the capitalâs central retail district for more than six weeks. Nearly 40 people have been killed and hundreds have been injured over the past five days.
One leader, Jatuporn Prompan, declared the protest over.
âWe cannot resist against these savages anymore,â Mr. Jatuporn said on a stage inside the protest zone. He was booed.
âPlease listen to me, please listen to me!â he pleaded to the angry crowd. âBrothers and sisters, I will use the word âbeg.â I beg you. We have to end this for now.â
But Mr. Jatupornâs words did nothing to calm the chaos. Protesters began smashing the surrounding buildings, a large shopping mall called Central World was on fire, and as many as 20 loud explosions were head.
On Sukhumvit Road, a neighborhood popular with foreigners, several men wearing black doused tires with fuel and set them alight, creating a bonfire and blocking a major intersection. Bystanders gathered on the street corner and ed, as police officers failed to persuade the men to stop.
Smoke also engulfed the Sheraton hotel on Sukhumvit when a fire was set on the street outside the building.
Shortly before the leaders surrendered, heavy gunfire was continuing in the zone, new barricades were being erected and soldiers said protesters were firing grenades at them from tall buildings.
There was a tone of defiance and resignation from the principal protest leaders. Standing on a stage amid the chaos inside the protest zone, just before giving up, Nattawut Saikua shouted, âIf the prime minister wants to govern the country on the top of this wreckage, he should go ahead and kill us all. But if he wants to do the right thing, he should stop the shooting immediately.â
The crackdown in Bangkok angered supporters of the protest movement in at least two northeastern provinces, in the populous rice-growing area that is the cradle of the movement. Thai media reported that thousands of protesters attacked the city halls of two provincial capitals.
As the military advanced on the protest zone in Bangkok on Wednesday morning, troops took control of key roads as well as a large park. Television footage showed soldiers opening fire at the backs of protesters running for cover. A government spokesman, Panitan Wattanayagorn, said the first phase of the operation had been âsuccessful.â
âWe are going to focus on setting a perimeter,â Mr. Panitan said on television in the morning. âWe would like to reassure the citizens, the residents of Bangkok, that the operations are designed to make sure we stabilize the area.â
Several fires raged around the protest zone, including what appeared on television to be a blaze engulfing a large block of buildings. The zone itself is among the wealthiest neighborhoods in Bangkok and includes many corporate headquarters, high-end shopping malls, luxury hotels and high-rise apartment buildings.
One of the protest leaders, Weng Tojirakarn, appeared calm even as the operation was under way. âI have no gun,â he said in an interview inside the encampment. âI canât do anything.â
But some of those who called themselves guards behind the barricades were armed; one had a shotgun and another had an M-16 rifle. When a reporter pointed this out, Dr. Weng, a medical doctor by training, responded, âHow can you compare a handmade shotgun with a tank?â
At least two protesters and an Italian news photographer were shot dead, according to Thai news media, and two foreign journalists and one Thai photographer were wounded.
Dat is natuurlijk absoluut geen oplossing. Wellicht bevinden zich er ook nog steeds kinderen en vrouwen in de buurt. Niet alle roodhemden zijn natuurlijk terroristen of rebellen.
Nogmaals, wat de roodhemden de laatste weken hebben gedaan keur ik niet goed, echter de beweegredenen van deze mensen kan ik zeker wel begrijpen.
Deze regering is niet democratisch gekozen door het volk, dus er moeten gewoon eerlijke verkiezingen komen. De huidige regering is een regering van de elite, een regering die zich niet bekommert om de arme bevolking.
Had net nog contact met een vriendin, een Thais/Nederlands meisje dat sinds een paar jaar weer in Bangkok woont. Ze zit nu bij een vriendin in huis, omdat ze in haar eigen huis te bang is. Te dichtbij de ellendeâŠ
Een goede vriend van me is getrouwd met een Thaise en wonen in Nederland.
Uiteraard zijn zij ook zeer bezorgd.

:chin:dit meen je toch niet echt hoop ik
Ik kan niet voor de poster spreken.
Maar ook de vakantie ganger is gefrusteerd omtrend dit alles.
We hebben al eerder gezegd het is voor ons MAAR een vakantie.
Dat is erg zwart wit,.
Een ieder heeft hier naar toegeleefd sommigen hebben jaren ervoor moeten sparen.
Je weet niet in welke werk omstandigheden,huiselijke situatie de vakantieganger zich bevind.
Dan komt er vaak een ongenuanceerde reactie.
Daar gaat het ook vaak mis, de frustraties lopen op en ergens komen deze eruit veelal met geweld.
Pak de kranten en vraag je af bij een zoveelste drama hoe heeft het zover kunnen komen.
Er is altijd een verhaal achter het persoon.
Ook ik baal enorm, als dit zich niet oplost dan is er geen vakantie, verlies van geld.
Moet ik blij zijn ?
Nee dat niet heb ik het recht tot woede, ook niet, maar ik ben nu niet het prettigste persoon voor mijn omgeving op dit moment.
Van binnen huil ik als ik weer een slachtoffer /mensen leven kapot zie gaan.
Stel dat het rustig wordt kun je dan even een frisdrankje pakken in het Sala Daeng gebied.
Onderuit zitten tussen de littekens van dit geweld.
Ik niet maar ik heb me verbaasd dat toen de lijken op het strand in phuket lagen dat sommigen hun handdoek uitvouwde en gingen zonnen.
Elke vorm van menselijkheid is dan verdwenen.
Ik hoop nog steeds de school spulletjes naar het dorps schooltje te kunnen brengen.
Dat is voor mij mijn reis doel en onze kinderen een andere cultuur mee te geven.
Hier is alles vanzelfsprekend daar niet.
Ik hoop nog steeds.
