**BANGKOK - Een vliegtuig van de Thaise luchtvaartmaatschappij Bangkok Airways is dinsdag neergestort bij de landing op het vliegveld van het vakantie-eiland Koh Samui. **

Zeker een inzittende is daardoor om het leven gekomen, zeven mensen zouden gewond zijn geraakt. Dat meldde de plaatselijke politie.

Het vliegtuig raakte tijdens slecht weer een oude verkeerstoren van het vliegveld. Het toestel was naar verluidt met ongeveer zeventig mensen aan boord, voornamelijk toeristen, vertrokken vanuit de zuidelijke stad Krabi.

Het is nog niet bekend of onder de inzittenden ook Nederlanders zijn.

Volgens persbureau AFP zijn alle passagiers geëvacueerd.

A Bangkok Airways plane skidded off the runway and crashed at Samui airport on Tuesday afternoon, killing a pilot and injuring six other people.

Flight PG 266 crashed in severe weather on arriving at the resort island in Surat Thani about 2pm from Krabi province.

The plane reportedly skidded off the runway and collided with an old control tower as the captain attemped to land at Samui airport.

President of Bangkok Airways Capt Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said at a press conference at 5pm that the ATR-72 500 series with 70 seats carried 68 passengers, two pilots and two flight attendants.

All of the passengers were foreigners from countries including Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Israel.

The accident killed the pilot and injured six people, four of them seriously. Those in critical condition were taken to Bangkok Samui Hospital. Two others with minor injuries were delivered to the Thai Inter Hospital, he said. The other passengers were taken to their hotels.

Capt Puttipong did not pinpoint the cause of the crash. The airline has taken an investigation team from the Department of Aviation to the accident site at Samui airport.

He said the dead pilot, Pilot Officer Chartchai Pansuwan, was very experienced. He had worked for the company for 19 years, and had flown this model aircraft for 14 years.

After the crash, Thai Airways International cancelled two flights to Samui, TG 287 and TG 288, leaving more than 200 passengers stranded at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Samui airport was closed after the accident.

Initial reportson local television stations said up to 10 people had died in the crash, but the figure was rapidly reduced during the afternoon.

BANGKOK - Bij een vliegtuigongeluk op een Thais vakantie-eiland dinsdag zijn een dode en zeker zeven gewonden gevallen. Bij de landing schoof het vliegtuig van Bangkok Airlines van de baan en crashte het tegen de verkeerstoren.

Dat meldde de plaatselijke politie.

Het vliegtuig raakte tijdens slecht weer een oude verkeerstoren van het vliegveld. Het toestel was naar verluidt met ongeveer zeventig mensen aan boord, voornamelijk toeristen, vertrokken vanuit de zuidelijke stad Krabi. Het is nog niet bekend of onder de inzittenden ook Nederlanders zijn.

Het Thaise vakantie-eiland Koh Samui ligt ongeveer 480 kilometer ten zuiden van Bangkok.

Bangkok Airways aircraft skidded of runway at Samui Airport and crashed into an aviation control tower on Tuesday.

The accident took place at about 2.30pm and as of 3pm, there was still unclear on the number of injuries and fatalities.

Rescue teams and workers rushed to the scene to evacuate the passengers of the ill-fated flight.

Initial report said that the 75-seat aircraft from Krabi province was landing at the Samui airport when it slid of the runway reportedly because of the poor weather.

The Nation’s reporter who was at the scene said the aircraft was not caught on fire when the crash happened.

Samui district chief Sakchai Johpalit said rescue workers were evacuating the injured passengers from the aircraft.

The aircraft carried altogether 68 passengers and four crew members.

The accident took place as the island was hit by consecutive days of heavy rains. Heavy rains continued after the accident happened.

BANGKOK - “Het weer was slecht, het regende vreselijk hard en er was veel turbulentie. Ik merkte dat het landen niet helemaal lekker ging, heel wiebelig”, zegt de Nederlandse Marion Wismeijer, die aan boord was van het Bangkok Airways-toestel dat dinsdag (4 augustus) crashte op de luchthaven van het Thaise eiland Koh Samui.

De medewerkster van de Nederlandse ambassade in Thailand vloog samen met haar man, diens broer en zijn vriendin van het zuidelijke vakantieoord Krabi naar Koh Samui, waar zij de laatste vier dagen van hun vakantie zouden doorbrengen.

In totaal waren 72 mensen aan boord van de ATR-72, waaronder negen Nederlanders. Een van de piloten overleefde het ongeluk niet.

Volgens Bangkok Airways raakten zeven mensen gewond, van wie vijf ernstig. Andere Thaise bronnen meldden circa veertig gewonden.

“Het toestel ging plotseling helemaal naar rechts en vervolgens helemaal naar links. Het ging veel te hard. Ik keek naar buiten en zag gras. Toen hoorden we een verschrikkelijk harde klap en kwam er opeens een heleboel schuim uit de wanden en uit het plafond.”

Ze vertelt hoe iedereen uit zijn stoel stoof om naar de uitgang te rennen. “Maar de stewardess verzocht ons vriendelijk te blijven zitten.” Wismeijer en haar familie luisterden daar niet naar. Ze grepen hun handbagage en renden naar achteren, maar de deur was gesloten.

“Iedereen gilde ‘doe open, doe open’ en toen ging de uitgang open. We zijn met de andere passagiers zo hard als we konden naar buiten gerend, zo ver mogelijk bij het vliegtuig vandaan, uit angst dat het zou ontploffen.”

Eenmaal buiten zag ze de schade aan het toestel. “De cockpit was helemaal in elkaar geduwd.” Ze moet er nog van bijkomen. “Ik heb een paar schrammen en schaafwonden, maar het was echt een shock.”

Volgens Wismeijer was er nog een Nederlands meisje aan boord en een Nederlands gezin met twee kinderen. “Het meisje zit bij ons in het hotel, maar het gezin hebben we niet meer gezien. Ik heb meerdere keren aan het luchthavenpersoneel gevraagd of het gezin was gesignaleerd en of er nog meer Nederlanders aan boord waren, maar niemand kon mij dat vertellen.”

De Nederlanders blijven nog een paar dagen op het eiland. “We gaan met de boot terug naar het vasteland en vandaar met een busje naar Bangkok. Niemand wil meer terugvliegen.”

Waar heb ik dat verhaal nog eens gehoord,slecht weer zware turbelency een vliegtuig dat crasht,juist Dave,2 jaar geleden,de beelden komen bij mij terug naar boven!1-2-go(2007)het vliegtuig waar ik ben uitgestapt ben samen met mijn vriendin in bkk,daarna vloog het vliegtuig door naar Phuket met de bekende gevolgen!door het oog van de naald zijn wij gekropen!Ik wens de mensen die aan boord waren van het Bangkok airways toestel veel sterkte.georgessiam

Kan me heel goed voorstellen dat de beelden nu weer naar boven komen. Lijkt idd een beetje identieke situatie, slecht weer, veel turbulentie.

Was net NL passagier die over het ongeluk vertelde op de radio…brrrrrrr…krijg er koude rillingen van.

Officials say rain, wind struck plane as it landed

Aviation officials have rushed to Koh Samui to begin investigating the crash of the Bangkok Airways plane which killed the pilot and injured 12 people, four of them seriously.

Those injured include the co-pilot, the two crew members and nine passengers.

The accident yesterday forced the closure of the one-runway airport and it will remain out of action until the Civil Aviation Department officials order the debris to be cleared.

Witnesses to the accident, including airport staff, have suggested a heavy rainstorm at the time was likely to have disrupted the landing of PG 226 from Krabi which had 68 passengers, two pilots and two crew members on board, the CAD said.

The accident occurred at 2.30pm. The French-manufactured 70-seat ATR 72-500 aircraft skidded off the runway as it was touching down in heavy rains and strong winds.

It crashed into an old air traffic control tower. Bangkok Airways president Puttipong Prasarttong-osoth said the pilot apparently died on impact.

Mr Puttipong and CAD director-general Kannika Khemawuthanont said civil aviation officials were dispatched to the resort island to investigate the accident along with Bangkok Airways staff.

As the airport was closed, the officials had to take a flight to Surat Thani and continue to the resort island by ferry.

Deputy chief of the department Wutthichai Singmanee said the investigators needed to examine the flight recorder first.

The front part of the plane hit the old air traffic control tower which had been transformed into a fire station. The front section was severely damaged.

Mr Puttipong said chief pilot Chartchai Pansuwan, 58, who died in the crash, was an experienced operator and had piloted ATR72-500 aircraft for 14 years. The aircraft was commissioned in 2001 and had flown more than 19,000 flights.

The aircraft, including accident coverage, was insured for US$250 million (8.5 billion baht) with Bangkok Insurance Co.

The four passengers seriously injured were two Britons, one Swiss and one Italian. Most of the injured suffered broken legs or leg wounds.

Mr Puttipong said most of the passengers were foreign tourists including nationals of Germany, the Netherlands, Israel, Spain and France.

Somchai Baimuang of the Meteorological Department yesterday said strong winds reaching 30 knots were recorded at the time of the crash.

An official at the airport who asked not to be named said there were heavy rains and strong winds before the landing. “During the landing there was a strong wind. What happened is similar to the crash of the One-Two-Go plane in Phuket,” he said.

On Sept 16, 2007, a One-Two-Go plane crashed while landing in bad weather in Phuket, killing 88 people.

Health officials said nine people remained hospitalised including the co-pilot who was among the last to be evacuated from the aircraft.

Following the crash, calls for donations of blood Type B were made through television and radio stations.

The airport closure forced Thai Airways International to cancel two flights, TG 288 and TG 287, between Bangkok and Samui.

According to THAI, the cancellation affected 292 passengers and accommodation would be arranged for them.

Bangkok Airways has set up an emergency call centre number - 02 265 8777.

Samui airport currently handles 16 flights a day. That figures increases to 24 during the high season.

The body of the pilot who was killed when a Bangkok Airways plane crashed into an old control tower while landing on Koh Samui on Tuesday arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday morning.

The body of chief pilot Chartchai Pansuwan, 58, was flown to the capital for religious ceremonies.

Thanawat Premruedee, the co-pilot who was injured in the crash, was also brought to Bangkok and admitted to Bangkok Hospital.

The public relations director of Bangkok Airways, ML Nanthika Varavarna, said the airline has scheduled a flight to pick up the stranded passengers, mostly foreigners, from Surat Thani airport this morning.

Samui airport will stil be closed at the time and the passengers will need to take the ferry from Koh Samui to the mainland.

Samui airport is expected to reopen to flights at 1pm today.

Samui airport resumed operation on Wednesday afternoon after the debris from the crashed Bangkok Airways plane was cleared from the single runway.

Bangkok Airways’ PG 100 was the first flight, leaving Koh Samui at 2pm for a scheduled landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport at 3pm.

The airline’s first flight to depart for Samui was PG 153, leaving Bangkok at 2pm for arrival on the resort island at 3pm.

A Bangkok Airways statement said there would be 16 flights from Bangkok to Samui, 17 flights from Samui to Bangkok, one flight from Samui to Phuket, one flight from Phuket to Samui, one flight from Uta-pao to Samui and one more flight from Samui to Uta-pao on Wednesday.

There will be two international flights from Samui to Singapore, two flights from Singapore to Samui, one flight from Samui to Hong Kong and one flight from Hong Kong to Samui.

Transport deputy permanent secretary Chaisak Angkasuwan said it would take about a month for investigators to establish the cause of Tuesday’s crash on Koh Samui.

Mr Chaisak said bad weather, possible human error or a defective engine part would all have to be taken into consideration. Even then a further investigation would be necessary.

Investigators finished collecting evidence at the site before noon on Wednesday, he said.

He said the full investigation would not take about a year, as in the case of the One-Two-Go air crash at Phuket International Airport two years ago.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee will send the flight recorder, or black box, from the crashed plane to France for decoding because the ATR 72 aircraft was manufactured there, he said.

Meanwhile, the body of the pilot who was killed in the plane crash arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday morning.

The body of chief pilot Chartchai Pansuwan, 58, killed in the crash, was flown to the capital for religious ceremonies on Wednesday morning.

Thanawat Premruedee, the co-pilot who was also injured, was also transferred to Bangkok and admitted to Bangkok Hospital for further treatment.

Dr Chatree Duangnet of Bangkok Hospital said the co-pilot’s injuries were severe. He had broken bones, one of which penetrated his lung.

Surgeons would operate on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. He would also get a brain scan to see if everything was functioning normally, he said.

The accident killed the pilot and injured 12 people. Most of the injured were European tourists who had been holidaying in Krabi, also a popular destination.

The crash occured in severe weather and high winds, with the aircraft veering off the runway and crashing into an old control tower.

Wil hiet toch even een bericht aan toe voegen
mijn vriendin werkt in het thai internationaal.
Hun mochten een gewonden behandelen.
Zelfs de zwaargewonden werden allemaal overgebracht.
Naar het bangkok hospital hier op het eiland.

Dat is weer schrikken wat er gebeurd is. Volgend jaar hebben wij het plan opgevat om van Bangkok naar Krabi te vliegen.Terug naar Bangkok vanaf Phuket. We zijn niet bang uitgevallen alleen wel een stuk voorzichtiger geworden. We kunnen wel degelijk naar de weersomstandigheden kijken maar als je met helder weer vertrekt weet je ook niet wat er onderweg kan gebeuren. Moeilijke keuze.

Je kan idd naar de weersomstandigheden kijken, maar ja, je kan moeilijk elke keer niet instappen als het slecht weer is. De kans op een incident blijft natuurlijk erg klein, hoewel er de laatste tijd wel het e.e.a. gebeurd is (ook vandaag weer problemen in Parijs…brand in een motor, airbus van Vueling).

Helder weer zegt ook niet veel, ook dan kan je plotseling veel turbulentie hebben, CAT (Clear Air Turbulence).

:chin:Het is te zien met welke luchtvaartmaatschappij je vliegt in Thailand zelf!nok air,airasian,one two go:dit zijn lowbudget companies!hoe langer de vliegtuigen aan de grond blijven,hoe minder ze kunnen verdienen!Ik heb het al aan de lijve ondervonden,2 jaar geleden met 1-2 go vlucht cnx/bkk/phuket.slecht weer veel turbulentie,mijn vriendin en mijzelf zijn uitgestapt in bkk en het vliegtuig was doorgevlogen naar Phuket,waar het voor de landing is neergestort!Dit vliegtuig had nooit mogen vertrekken in Chiangmai;maar hoe zeggen ze?"stilstaan is achteruit gaan"In mijn vorige quots: had ik ook gezegd,dat tijdens de bewuste fatale vlucht van 1-2-go,de cabinedeur wagenwijd openstond en dat de stewardessen niet gerust waren over de zware turbulentie dat er toen was tijdens het vliegen!Natuurlijk vliegen we goedkoop met deze maatschappijen,maar voor welke prijs???Ik zou zeggen veiligheid primeert op de eerste plaatsdenk je niet???georgessiam
