Another way: : Just go to your nearest Camping & Sports supply store in any major city here in Ecuador and they will tell you where the nearest rock climbing places are, and the local clubs or groups that you can join to practice the sport.

Some of the best rock climbing spots in Ecuador are:

RIOBAMBA - Acantilado de San Juan

CUENCA - (undoubtably the hot spot for rock climbing)

  • Sayausi (about 8 km from Cuenca),
  • Cajas National Park
  • in town: the “rockopdromo” in the Federacion Deportiva del Azuay.

Cerro Ahuaca in CARIAMANGA in Loja Province - http://www.micariamanga.galeon.com/album845999.html

QUITO:

  • " Complejo de escalada Santa Clara" , a few km from Sangolquí (Valle de los Chillos)… .a rock climbing facility.
  • " Escuela de escalada Cuyuja" , 15 mins from Papallacta
  • In town: " Complejo de escalada “Ciudad de Quito” o “El Rocódromo”, part of the " Concentración Deportiva de Pichincha (CDP) - Asociación de Excursionismo y Andinismo de Pichincha (AEAP)" , in the Vicentina sector or Quito. Weekends classes and acticities $15 and monthly dues $10.

One thing, unfotunately nature has not provided Ecuador with too many prime spots for rock climbing, but there are a few great ones. You really have to look hard for them. Often vertical rock faces tend to be crumbly volcanic rock and is not good quality for a good grip, plus they are mosty overgrown with plants.

The biggest adventure sports here are trekking & mountain climbing (here called “Andinismo”) and often rock climbing is combined with them as an adjunct during the outings.

I hope this helps,
