The Public Health Ministry expects the second round of Type A (H1N1) influenza outbreak is expected to hit the country in the middle of this month but with less severity, public health permanent secretary Paijit Warachit said on Monday.

Mr Paijit said less severity of the flu is anticipated on the grounds that people have acquired enough knowledge and experience to cope with it.

Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart, chairman of the committee on prevention and control of H1N1 pandemic, said during April 28-Oct 24 this year H1N1 flu spread to all provinces and nearly all districts of the country.

It was believed 6 million Thai people had contracted the flu and developed immunity against it. The death toll from the flu in Thailand was 182, 90 men and 92 women, most of them between 31-40 years of age. They constituted about 3 per cent of the death toll worldwide, Maj-Gen Sanan said.

Maj-Gen Sanan said stricter measures must be taken to cope with the second round of pandemic. The Disease Control Department has ordered a total of 5 million doses of H1N1 vaccine, he added.

The deputy prime minister said his committee will hold the next meeting on Nov 11 to discuss preventive measures.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said the committee, in its meeting today, agreed to instruct hospitals nationwide to be fully prepared in terms of medicine and medical supplies. All provinces are to set up an operational centre against the flu, he said.

Manit Thiratantikanont, director-general of the Disease Control Department, said of the two million doses of vaccine ordered from France, the first one million doses will arrive in December. On the distribution of the vaccine, priorities will be given to public health staff, pregnant women, people weighing more than 100 kilogrammes, people aged below six months and above 64 years, and those with brain problems.

Two more patients died from complications caused by the A(H1N1) flu virus between between Oct 18 and 31, raising the number of swine flu fatalities to 184 since the first outbreak on April 28, the Public Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

Permanent secretary Paijit Warachit said hte ministry has made preparations for patients to get quicker access to anti-viral medicines in expectation of a possible second wave of the H1N1 pandemic.

“The ministry has ordered all hospitals to keep a continuous, close watch on patients who develop swine flu-like symptoms and to separate them from other patients,” Mr Paijit said.

Hospitals were also directed to have anti-viral medication readily available and set up intensive care units for swine flu patients.

The permanent health secretary gave assurances that anti-viral drugs are effective against the H1N1 flu and there is little chance of the virus having developed resistance to them.

The ministry had a reserve stockpile of 12 million tablets of oseltamivir, ready for any possible outbreak of the virus, he said.

There were no reports of death from type A(H1N1) flu in the country last week, Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said on Wednesday.

Mr Witthaya said this was probably because people now know how to protect themselves from the disease and have quicker access to medical treatment. This was the first week in four months that nobody died of the swine flu virus.

It was still necessary for the Public Health Ministry to be highly alert as the flu was spreading rapidly in countries such as China and India.

Mr Witthaya told directors of public health offices and hospitals from throughout the country at a meeting today to be prepared for the second-wave of flu-outbreak expected early next month.

The ministry would prepare vaccine supplies against the flu and launch an awareness campaign this month, he said.

The second round of the A(H1N1) swine flu epidemic has begun, Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said on Thursday.

He said some provinces had already encountered the second wave of swine flu with 30 per cent of 200 students tested in the northeastern province Nakhon Ratchasima having been diagnosed as infected with the virus.

The Public Health Ministry has launched a new campaign, Four to the Power of Four, to combat the resurgence of the virus, as it may spread quickly.

“Health agencies in all provinces will implement measures to limit the spread of the disease during the four months from November to February,” the minister said.

“Students, people of working age, the elderly and people with chronic diseases will be closely watched. The ministry will promote four activities to eliminate germs and four measures will be enforced at management level.”

People should look after their health and follow the advice given by health officials, he said.

“The government is considering buying 800,000 more doses of H1N1 vaccine, having already purchased two million doses from France,” he said.

Additional supplies of the vaccine would be distributed to private hospitals, where people could buy it, he said.

In the first round of the outbreak, an estimated 8.4 million Thais were infected by the A(H1N1) virus - 20 per cent of them lived in Bangkok.

On Wednesday, the ministry confirmed one additional death, bringing the country’s total death toll from the epidemic to 185.
