Dear all, my wife and I are seriously investigating to emigrate permanently to St. Maarten in 2013 / 2014 from the Netherlands.
First of all I would like to thank you all for the information I read until now. I did notice that some information needs to be filtered, because they are quit personal. At the moment we only consider the major issues and not the peripheral issues. Valuable information is still welcome though
The good thing is that in July 2012 we will have friends (locals) which moved back to the island after 12 years. And they are willing to help where they can.
I don’t think the language is an issue, because my wife is a native Spanish speaker and fluently in English. I speak fluently Dutch & English and a little bit of Spanish and German.
Hi Edwin welcome to this Dutch travel site!
So you make the big step to emigrate to St. Maarten.
Below I have posted some information for you.
Dutch citizens may stay up to six months on St. Maarten (or in the Netherlands Antilles) as a tourist. During that time they are not allowed to work! For Dutch citizens wishing to permanently move to St. Maarten (retirees) they must apply for a residency permit. This does not allow them to work.
Other foreigners wishing to reside in St. Maarten must also have a residency permit. They must be able to demonstrate financial independency.
Any foreigner wishing to work on St. Maarten must be in possession of a work permit prior to arriving on the island. This must be arranged by the employer wishing to employ a foreigner.
For citizens or temporary residents, who want to know about procedures & requirements in regards to the Government of St. Maarten services and products, i.e. registering of births, obtaining passports, getting marriage, Identification cards and registering a change of address, you can always visiting this website if you whant more information Edwin
