I’m going back!
Well folks I’m off again to South Africa but this time in the capacity of researcher and volunteer. I have obtained permission from La Trobe University to conduct qualitative research titled: “Attitudes, cultural beliefs and stigma towards HIV/AIDS among street youth in Durban, South Africa: Implications for treatment and prevention.” So I’m off again to Umthombo Safespace - a shelter for street kids that is doing wonderful work in South Africa, where I volunteered a year ago.
Ethical approval was only finalised less than a week before departure so I am really feeling quite unprepared for what is to come. A big thank you to my wonderful partner Gaz for helping me finalise my research questions and giving me lots of support in preparation for 4 weeks in Durban.
Not looking forward to the plane trip or the jet lag and I’m really going to miss my loved ones and friends but I’ve worked so hard for this opportunity and I have decided that I’d rather write up a thesis about what I am passionate about. Mind you, I couldn’t have picked a more difficult project to get past a university ethics committee!
Well follow the blog if you want to know what I get up to for the next 4 weeks.
Luv & hugs,
Sylv.
