Yes it is great technology that uses satellites. Many saves have been done around the world thanks to those devices.I take one on my motorcycle trips. I carry this one:

but thankfully I have not had to use it yet.They are called P-EPIRB (Personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) or P-ELT (Personal Emergency Locator Transmitter) or PLB ( Personal Locator Beacon), etc. and it now is available to any one for purchase from about $1000 for a top of the line one to about $100 for one that requires a subscription, depending on the level of service and reliability you want. These things are about the size of a pack of cigarettes or an older cell phone.They pin-point your position within about 50- 100 feet accuracy anywhere in the world as long as it has a clear view of the GPS satellites. Some will transmit your position to a secure website so friends and family can follow your progress on-line.
In case of emergency it sends a distress signal via satellite within 3 minutes of activation to designated friends, family or a rescue coordination center, which then alerts (by phone) the nearest rescue authorities anywhere in the world and advises them of your GPS coordinates for rescue.
This one is the more expensive but more reliable;

This is the cheaper one but it requires a yearly subscription and some users report find it as less reliable.

This is the one with he online tracking option on a website. There are several other brands priced in-between
Kortom misschien geen slecht idee.Het is natuurlijk niet alleen in Ecuador bruikbaar.
