Dry season in RI to peak in June-August

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - In some 220 regions in Indonesia the dry season this year will peak in June, July and August, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said here on Wednesday.

“There are regions where the dry season will begin in the third week of March, in first 10 days of April or in May or June. It will vary in each region,” BMG head Sri Woro B Harijono said at his office.

He said the dry season would begin in the third week of March in only one of 94 regions in Java, two of 13 regions in Bali and four of 20 regions in East Nusa Tenggara.

Overall, only four percent of the 220 regions would enter the dry season in March. This was because 25 percent of the regions would enter the dry season in April, 39 percent in May, 24 percent in June, seven percent in July and one percent in August, he said.

“Papua and Kalimantan will enter the dry season in June. The dry season will commence earlier in Sulawesi, Sumatra and Maluku in May,” he added.

Although the dry season would start in late March, cautiousness still had to be exercised on a number of regions which would still receive high rainfalls that could cause floods.

Regions which still have the potentials to be flooded in March included those in Java, Sulawesi, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara.

In the meantime, regions which could have heavy rainfalls and floods in April are those in Sumatra (the cities of Padang, Solok and Sangir), Java (Kertaraharja-Banjarsari, Cibodas, Pandeglang) and East Java (Kapas, Balen, Sukosewu of Bojonegoro district).

On the storms that have taken place several times in Jakarta of late, Woro said that they should not raise much concern because their intensity had been declining. (*)
