Het befaamde treintraject wordt weer geopend op 1 feb.2011.De uitbreiding-renovatie van het spoor gaat gestaag door.De routes die nu operationeel zijn:
We rode the train yesterday,so here is a first person account. Scenery was
beautiful since the train follows a river valley between very steep mountains.
Costs $20.Fare includes sandwich and coffee/tea and a folkloric dance exhibition at Sibambe.Runs from Alausi to Sibambe (the Devil’s Nose) and back. Does NOT go to Riobamba. Train officials said the route to Riobamba was scheduled to be complete in July 2012.Riding on top is not permitted.
There are 3 passenger cars, all recently restored. Each car has a conductor who also doubles as a guide, in both English and Spanish.
Runs Tue-Sun at 0800, 1100, and 1500. Roundtrip is 2.5 hrs including lunch.
Buses run from Cuenca terminal terrestre to Alausi and cost $5 each way. It
takes 4.5 hours to get there, and 3 hrs to return. We did it in one day, but
it’s a long day.

Overall, we enjoyed the trip and would recommend it as something unique to do in Ecuador. I’m glad I did it once, but once was probably enough.By the way, Terminal Terrestre has wifi to add to the map, but it wouldn’t connect to my email, so may not be that reliable.
