**BUG Review**
Banyan View scores well on cleanliness and the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms are in good shape. Big mirrors and windows make the air-conditioned (or fan-cooled for the cheapest rooms) dorms and double rooms feel spacious. The TV lounge is comfy and internet access is free (a rarity in Darwin) and the outdoor area has a barbecue, swimming pool and a nice spa pool. Banyan View is a part of the YWCA and there is an institutional feel that comes with being run by a large organisation. Party animals might look elsewhere though, it seems like alcohol is more accepted than encouraged. The hostel has a room full of toys for the little ones so the doors are obviously open for families.

Chilli’s Backpackers is conveniently located next to the Greyhound transit centre, and lots of plants green up the exterior of the building. There are nice open-air common areas on the balcony and the dorms are clean and in fairly good shape with proper inner-spring mattresses, but the overall maintenance could be better (especially the bathrooms). Like most hostels in Darwin, there is internet access plus a kitchen and laundry facilities. There are two spa pools on the rear deck and guests can cool down in the swimming pool at Youth Shack, just up the road.

Darwin YHA is really an old motel-turned-hostel, with drive-in parking right outside the dorms. There are fridges in the rooms (another leftover from the motel-era), a swimming pool, and a good TV lounge. The excellent bar is the social centre of the hostel but the hostel isn’t so lively when the bar is closed. Although the cleanliness is acceptable, the maintenance is below average, although the building is slowly undergoing a renovation. There are no lockers, which could be an issue for travellers with expensive gadgets.

The lush green outdoor area makes Elke’s an attractive hostel. Thanks to the newly-renovated dorms, toilets and kitchen, Elke’s feels clean and well maintained. In addition to the kitchen, you’ll find a swimming pool, laundry facilities, barbecue and a decent TV lounge. The dormitories are air-conditioned, which is essential in Darwin. Overall Elke’s is a nice place - especially if you’re looking for a peaceful atmosphere.

The hostel is painted half-and-half in pink and green, and the building looks good with its wooden balcony, which is a nice place to eat your home-made meals - a well-equipped kitchen is available for use. We found a pretty unclean and badly maintained bathroom when we visited, but the kitchen and the dorms are at an acceptable level. Lockers are available, so are board games and a swimming pool.

Gecko Lodge is a small and fairly worn-out hostel with 30 dorm-beds to offer. It’s not the cleanest hostel in Darwin. However, there’s certainly a laid-back atmosphere with a family-feel in the mellow hostel with comfy old sofas, a small kitchen and accompanying seating area that makes it an easy place to socialise with fellow travellers. The maintenance could certainly be better, but to some the pancake breakfast might make up for it. Outdoors there is a nice swimming pool and barbecue area. Bicycles are for rent for just $12 a day.

The Mandorah Beach Hotel has great value accommodation with a beautiful beachfront setting across the harbour from Darwin. Accommodation is in basic, but spacious, four-bed dorms with en suite bathrooms. It features a large swimming pool, beach volleyball and an area with video games and pool tables. There is also a restaurant with good value meals and a 24-hour bar. It is a very relaxing place to stay. The hostel is best reached by ferry from Cullen Bay in Darwin. The ferry costs $18 return or $55 for a weekly pass.

**BUG Review**
Melaleuca on Mitchell is a new purpose-built hostel right in the hubbub of Mitchell Street’s nightlife. It feels surprisingly worn around the edges for a building that’s only a few years old, but it is still a top choice. Accommodation is in clean air-conditioned rooms with a locker for each bed but some travellers find the plastic mattresses a bit uncomfortable. The main focus of the hostel is the open-air common area upstairs that feature a bar, TV area, swimming pool and spa pool. There are also kitchen and laundry facilities. All things considered it is Darwin’s best budget accommodation option.

The Cavenagh is centred on a big swimming pool. It has two levels of accommodation that could be better maintained with a basic kitchen and shabby bathrooms. The accommodation contrasts sharply with the flash bar and restaurant that is complete with modern furniture, flat screen TVs and cheap beer-and-burger combos. Youth Shack is a relatively good hostel that has a big kitchen, TV lounge, pool table and a big air-conditioned lobby with internet access including Wi-Fi ($6 per hour, Global Gossip Connect). There is also a nice swimming pool that attracts guests from the affiliated Chilli’s Backpackers just up the road. Although the swimming pool area has the potential to be a sociable spot, the no-alcohol rule keeps a lid on the hostel’s atmosphere.

Hoi,
