Thai AirAsia will add a second daily service on its Bangkok-Rangoon route on July 15 to tap rising international leisure travel to the country, spurred by the Burmese government’s recent decision to offer visas on arrival.
Earlier, Bangkok Airways increased its Rangoon flights to twice daily.
Tourist visas, which previously had to be arranged days in advance at an embassy abroad, are available at international airports in Rangoon and Mandalay, a move engineered to promote the country’s nascent tourism sector.
Thai AirAsia chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said the airline also wanted to offer to offer greater time convenience to tourists, by adding an afternoon flight to the existing morning service.
The new flight leaves Bangkok at 4.35 pm and returns from Rangoon at 5.50. The current flight departs Bangkok at 7.15 am and leaved Rangoon at 8.35.
The recent delivery of a new Airbus 320, Thai AirAsia’s 15th, also provides the capacity to support the added service, Mr Tassapon said.
Total tourist arrivals in Burma in the year to March 31 were 300,000, up from 255,288 in the same period a year earlie
