**Description of organization: **
The healthcare post in Baquerizo Moreno is the only public healthcare center on San Cristobal Island, one of the inhabited islands of the Galapagos Archipel. The local government is dedicating funds in preventing diseases and give health education at the islands. Currently there is one nutritionist for all the inhabited islands, whom is located at San Cristobal. The nutritionist works at the healthcare post and treats different diseases and diagnosis. Most prevelant are patients with diabetes, cholesterol problems, obesitas and hypertension
She is also responsible for setting up prevention activities and a nutritional education package to be thaught at all primary and secondary school in San Cristobal. For the prevention activities she needs to make brochures and posters about for example about breastfeeding or giving information about what a healthy diet looks like.
Aside from these informational posters and leaflets, they createfun-educational activities concerning nutrition for the youngest kids. An example is the interactive puppet theatre .
Internship possibilities:
As a student in nutrition you will have the possibility to work alongside the nutritionist at the healthcare center on a daily basis and spend time on the assignment of designing a health education package and implementing it. Such as:
- assist with diagnosing, controling and advicing patients
- creating leaflets and posters on nutricional issues for schools and patients
- creating and leading educational activities at the schools on the island
**Internship requirements: **
Before starting your internship you must speak at least the basics of Spanish, so you can communicate with your internship guide and patients. You can achieve this by taking a Spanish course in Ecuador. You need to be patient, and be able to take initiative and have organizational skills.
