Institution for young entrepreneurs*
Description of internship organization*
The Nicaraguan Institute is one of the oldest NGO´s in Nicaragua, founded in 1963 by young entrepreneurs to promote stronger links between society and private enterprise. In 1992 they have set up a special Program focused on young people to create their own business, called "Young Nicaraguan Entrepreneurs ( YNE). Although it is still linked to national institution, the youth version now has its own legal NGO status and is affiliated to another NGO active in this field; it is a worldwide organization with presence in some 120 countries.
YNE implements programs all over Nicaragua and the main office is located in Managua. They focus on different groups such as: kids and adolescents attending secondary education, youth from rural areas, youth in social risk situation (among others gang members). In 2012 they have already created over 40 new businesses.
Internship possibilities:
• You can evaluate and help improve (parts of) business plans
• You first can give assistance to groups of youth on how to run a business. Topics can be: how to present your business/ how to find clients (marketing and market analysis)/ how to improve your product/ how to set up your financial administration/ the pros and cons of loans/ etc.
• Help finding answers to different types of questions of the young entrepreneurs
• This NGO, as many others, is having trouble to get finance. There is a need for standardising their services so they can be applied more efficiently and so their results can be measured. This is important for proving their added value to get funds.
• Help developing the website so more of their tools, information and coaching can be found online in order to reach and support more young entrepreneurs.
*Guidance: *
YNE receives program finance assistance from international organizations such as World Bank, UNICEF and Inter American Foundation. A Dutch professional, financed by a German NGO, works for YNE as Program Advisor. The YNE Program Coordinator will be your internship guide, for day-to-day questions the Dutch professional can also help you.
*Remarks: *
This organization is located in Managua, but is easy to reach by public transport from Masaya. In Masaya you can live in a student house with other (mostly Dutch) international students. At the start of your internship you have to at least speak basic Spanish, which can be obtained by an intensive Spanish course of 4 of 3 weeks in Nicaragua prior to the start of your internship.
