Internship organization
This sport center is a non-profit center which promotes sport education as an alternative for the youth of Granada. It allows young people to develop their sport attitude and they encourage them to participate in competitions to improve their self-esteem with dedication and effort in different sport disciplines, for example: soccer, volleyball, taekwondo, judo, gym (fitness and weight lifting), athletics, table tennis, etc. The center offers these sports and sport classes/trainings for free.
The center employs 18 persons of which 9 sport teachers, all qualified in their sport discipline. The center receives approximately 250 persons per week of which the majority is between 16-20 years old. Some of them have participated in municipal, national and Central-American events and earned several trophies, medals and awards. The center wants to continue organizing tournaments, competitions, championships, friendly matches and leagues in order to join the children and youth of Granada.
In this way the center would like to encourage youth in the participation of sports and give their sportsmen the possibility to gain the necessary experiences in their pursuit of sport success. At the same time they also want to keep the youth off the streets and teach them discipline, perseverance, cooperation, fun, excellence, and norms and values through sports. Many children who visit the center have problems at home and in their lives. Through sports and training the center wants to improve their personal development, health (physically and mentally) and quality of life.
Activities for interns
The center would like to receive interns for sport related activities as well as office based related activities.
At this moment there is no one who is responsible for the marketing. For this reason they would like to have an intern who can work on different marketing activities:
[li]Sponsor and fundraising: the center is looking for sponsors that would like to e.g. donate money, sponsor talented sportsmen, donate sports materials, etc. They would like to know how to sell sport events and themselves to sponsors.[/li]

[li]Organizing sport events: regularly sport events are organized, however this can be done in a more professional way to make the events more attractive and well-known.They would like to have somebody who can help them with ideas and the organization of this.[/li]

[li]Promotion and marketing: the center would like to increase the awareness and promote the importance of sports in general as well as the center itself among the local population of Granada. In Nicaragua the mentality is that sports are not hot or important; people do not know the advantages of sports. The center also would like to focus on women, because they are the group that sports the least.[/li]

[li]Education and providing information: many children who visit the center have problems at home and in their lives. Sports help them a lot, but they also need motivational talks to persevere, motivate and to help them. These talks e.g. can be about general topics to a group, or a group discussion, but also to an individual in a personal, more psychological conversation.[/li]

[li]Sports classes/training: interns can teach and train the children at the center in their own sport disciplines, provided the intern is qualified enough in his/her own discipline of sports.[/li]
Interns who are interested in the sport related activities will focus on teaching and training the children. If you would like to teach/train a certain sport, it is necessary that you possess adequate skills, experience and that you have obtained a certain level in your discipline of sports. Furthermore, you will organize/ help organizing tournaments, competitions, etc. as well as providing information and motivational talks to the children. The center prefers a commitment of minimum three months.
Remarks
Concerning the office based activities you will be supervised by one of the managers of the center. Regarding the sport related activities you will be supervised by the local teachers, who are all qualified in their own sport discipline.
The people at the center do not speak English, it is therefore recommendable to take a Spanish course of 3 or 4 weeks in Nicaragua prior your internship. All papers, reports and documents should be written in Spanish or should be (partly) translated into Spanish.
Sports classes last 1,5 hours, except for soccer and judo which lasts longer. Classes are taught from Monday-Saturday from 8am-11am and 1pm-5.30pm. However, each sport has its own time(s) at the day, so you will not be teaching all day long. In the weekends on Saturday and Sunday, there are often competitions and tournaments. Office hours are from Monday-Friday from 8.30am-12pm and 1pm-5.30pm. At noon everybody goes home for lunch. The center is located in a poor neighborhood of Granada, it is therefore recommendable that you take a taxi.
