The Department of Highways is planning a fourth bridge linking Thailand and Laos.
Construction of the bridge across the Mekong River in Chiang Kong district will cut travel distance between Chiang Rai and Laos by half - to 75 kilometres - and cost 1.5 billion baht, says Theerapot Warachit, who is tasked with studying and reporting on the feasibility of building the bridge and a four-lane road link between Thailand and Laos.
The study will be completed next year and construction is expected to begin in 2011.
