To be built at a cost of about 1.5 billion baht with funding from Thailand and China, the bridge, which is part of Asian Highway 3, will link Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai Province with Houay Xay in Bokeo Province, northwest Laos.
Construction is expected to completed in 2012. In the meantime Thailand and Laos will work out tax rates on cross-border traffic and movement of freight, though it is expected that rates now in force at their common border check points will apply.
