BANGKOK, 29 November 2010 – Indonesia AirAsia announced, late last week, it will commence a three weekly service from Medan to Bangkok, 15 January, just two months after the launch of a Surabaya-Bangkok service.
Sister airline, Thai AirAsia, failed to establish a Medan flight out of its southern hub, Phuket, due to poor bookings. Medan and Phuket are two important tourist destinations in a region bureaucrats often refer to as the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle.
Indonesia AirAsia has opted for a service between Medan and Bangkok using an Airbus A320 aircraft for services scheduled on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Indonesia AirAsia CEO, Dharmadi said the move was part of an overall commitment to ”further strengthen its positioning as an ASEAN airline.”
Medan is the capital city of North Sumatra and noted for its historical and cultural sites as well as the natural beauty of Lake Toba.
The airline serves Bangkok linking it to destinations on Java and Sumatra Islands – Jakarta and Surabaya (flights started 3 November) and Medan (due to start 15 January).
Ex Bangkok, the standard Medan fares will start at Bt3,280, all inclusive. To mark the launch, AirAsia has rolled out a cheap fare, bookable until 30 November for travel from 15 January through to 30 November 2011 at around Bt1,265, all-in.
