Kuki Gallman was shot in the stomach when the vehicle she was in was ambushed by a group of armed Pokot or Samburu trespassers while patrolling the property and was forced to stop by a tree laid across the track. KWS rangers with her fought off the attackers but apparently none were wounded or captured. She was flown to hospital in Nanyuki to be stabilized and British army medics accompanied her in a helicopter for surgery in Nairobi. News on Monday was that she had come through surgery well and had no serious organ damage, but is still in the ICU as far as we know. Raila Odinga used the incident to castigate the government again for its inability to maintain peace, law and order in Laikipia, but at the same time elders in the Rift Valley blamed Raila Odinga and accused him of “inciting herders,” and called for his arrest. The Conservancy roads have since been blocked with trees, a Ranger post was burnt down with the Ranger’s belongings inside, and a lawyer involved in trespass cases in Nyahururu had his tyres slashed. British High Commissioner Nic Hailey discussed the tense situation with senior Laikipia officials in Nanyuki, and blamed unnamed politicians for the violence. He pointed out the amount of aid poured into Kenya by HMG, over Shs.40 billion a year, and promised to support development of the livestock industry in northern Kenya as a way of creating more employment.
