During the last weeks Egypt has experienced not only a political change but also a change in environmental awareness:
For more than one week people of all ages in Hurghada have gathered together and started to clean the city with their own hands. There have been underwater, island and city cleanups on a daily basis lately and the Hurghada seems to become cleaner day by day. It is amazing to see, how very young kids with gloves twice the size of their hands help out their parents and how everyone, no matter what age, gender, religion or nationality is joining forces together for the same goal: Making Hurghada clean.

And these cleanups do not only include garbage collection:
The wall opposite Esplanada mall for example used to be covered in graffiti. Not a nice scene since this area is not only popular for locals but also for a lot of tourists. Thanks to a group of young Egyptians, who put a lot of effort in scrubbing and painting this wall, it is now clean again and looks much nicer!
Also the curbs around Memsha, whose colour had faded over the years, were painted.

But it is not only the effort the people put into collecting, cleaning and painting. Especially the youth of Hurghada has been talking to the local people raising awareness about how necessary it is to dispose the garbage correctly.
We really hope that this increase of environmental awareness is not only a temporary movement. Information material about proper disposal of garbage will be distributed and spread all over Hurghada in a couple of days to educate people and change their old behaviour. This should be a new beginning for respecting our nature and so far it looks like it is working.
Thanks to all of you, who participated in the clean-ups! Keep up the good work!
