Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van het land is er door Noord-Korea in samenwerking met Belgische en Engelse filmmakers een film geproduceerd, een romantische komedie genaamd “Comrade Kim Goes Flying”. De film zal in september op het filmfestival van Pyongyang in première gaan. Voor wie wil, het is mogelijk dit festival te bezoeken.
Er is ook al een website voor de film, maar daarop valt nog weinig te zien.
Er zijn in het verleden wel door westerlingen documentaires gemaakt in het land met uiteraard medewerking van de overheid, zoals Crossing the Line en A State of Mind.
First N.K.-West joint film to premier in Pyongyang
SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) – The first film jointly produced by North Korea and Western producers will be screened for the first time at the upcoming international film festival to be held in Pyongyang in September, a news report said Thursday.
The film titled “Comrade Kim Goes Flying,” will premiere at the 2012 Pyongyang International Film Festival set to be held for eight days starting Sept. 20, according to the Washington-based Radio Free Asia.
As the North’s first romantic comedy feature film, the movie was produced by the communist country in partnership with Belgian producer Anja Daelemans and British-run travel agency Koryo Tours’ official Nick Bonner. The film was shot in Pyongyang with North Korean cast and crew, according to the report.
The biennial festival also plans to screen feature films including “Mr. Bean,” “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” and a South African movie titled “Cry, The Beloved Country,” the report said, citing Koryo Tours, which runs tour programs to the North for the film fest.

Comrade Kim Yong Mi is a 28 year-old coal miner who lives with her father and grandmother in a small village in the North Korean countryside. When she was young her Mother supported her dream to become an acrobat but when her mother died, her father wanted her to concentrate on her work in the coal and forget her childish dreams of flying. However, her love for acrobats never goes away and when she travels to Pyongyang to work for a year at the Construction Site the first thing she visits is the circus.
Backstage, she meets her heroine the famous trapeze artist Ri Su Yon who encourages her to go for an audition. It is like a dream come true but at the audition Yong Mi finds she cannot cope with the height of the trapeze and falls. She is mocked by Pak Jang Phil, the handsome, arrogant trapeze star. Groomed since childhood for stardom by an overbearing mother, he insults her and tells her that miners belong underground, not in the air.
Humiliated, Comrade Kim Yong Mi heads to the Construction Brigade determined to prove Pak Jang Phil wrong. Her sympathetic manager decides to help her overcome her fear of heights and enlists the whole company to help. She will perform as part of the Worker’s Festival to show her newly acquired talents before returning to the coal mine.
Pak Jang Phil runs into her on several occasions and finds himself inexplicably drawn to her. At the Worker’s Acrobatic Festival he is amazed by her performance and unconsciously falls in love.
He realises that Yong Mi could become a trapeze artist, even though she is already old by circus standards but he is determined to try.
He heads to the coal mine village to persuade Yong Mi to join the circus and to persuade her father to give permission.
Yong Mi and her dream of flying are reawakened. She trains for a position in the trapeze team but it is so hard that Comrade Kim Yong Mi comes close to giving up. However, she struggles on and as she does so she is drawn closer to Pak Jang Phil. The circus held a trial to see if she has the capability to perform at the highest level. She has just one last chance prove that a coal miner can fly and prove that dreams really can come true.

Modelarbeidster droomt van een leven als trapezeartiest. Aan de inmiddels unieke toon van onverwoestbaar opgewekt sociaal-realistisch melodrama en klassiek uitgelichte, kleurrijke mise-en-scène herkenbaar als Noord-Koreaans. Met liefde en volharding gemaakt door een Belgisch-Brits-Noord-Koreaans regietrio.
Heldin streeft droom na, wordt gedwarsboomd door hooghartige tegenspeler maar zet door en is uiteindelijk succesvol. Het klinkt als het standaardrecept voor een sprookje op Hollywood-leest. Maar **Comrade Kim Goes Flying **komt uit Noord-Korea en is vormgegeven als de opgewekt melodramatische propaganda uit de Stalinistische heilstaat.
De heldin in kwestie heet Kim Yong-Mi. Ze is mijnwerker maar wil - ondanks haar hoogtevrees - trapezeartiest worden. Dat levert haar de hoon op van circusster Pak Jang-Phil. Met een optreden op het arbeidersfestival als inzet volhardt Kim in haar training, wint ze het hart van haar tegenspeler en schittert ze uiteindelijk toch in de piste.
Hoewel op het eerste gezicht traditioneel, is Comrade Kim Goes Flying naar Noord-Koreaanse standaarden behoorlijk onconventioneel. De hoofdpersoon is hier geen macho volksheld maar een vrouw, partij en staat spelen een ondergeschikte rol. Subversief is het niet te noemen maar het is wel een nieuw geluid uit het meest geïsoleerde land ter wereld.
