Storm Mindulle brings torrential rain

Tropical storm Mindulle has brought torrential rain causing flooding in many provinces in the North and Northeast.
A Meteorological Department’s advirosy issued at 4am on Tuesday said tropical storm Mindulle was centred about 150km east of Donghoi, Vietnam, with maximum sustained wind of 95km per hour.

The storm was expected to move west-northwest about 18km per hour and make landfall over upper Vietnam on Tuesday night.

It was causing an active monsoon trough across northern and northeastern Thailand, bringing torrential rain.

People along hill slopes and waterways in the North, Northeast and East are warned of possible flash floods during this period.

Heavy rain was reported in many provinces in the Northeast on Tuesday morning.

Many roads in the municipal area of Sakon Nakhon were under 30-40cm of water, causing traffic congestion.

In Roi-et province, water overflowed the Chi river and flooded many villages and roads.

In Mukdahan, river water inundated many roads and residents built sandbag walls around their houses.

In Sukhothai province in the North, water from the Yom river inundated most of the provincial capital.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has issued a warning for people living in low-lying areas and river basins in 50 provinces throughout the country to brace for flash floods from heavy rain expected from now until Aug 28.

The 50 provinces are:

  • Lampang, Chiang Mai, Lamphum, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Tak, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Phetchabun, Uttaradit, Kamphaeng Phet and Phichit in the North;
  • Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi-et, Kalasin, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Surin, and Buri Ram in the Northeast;
  • Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat in the Central; and,
  • Ranong, Phuket, Krabi, Phangnga, Trang, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat in the South.Bangkokpost
