The State Railway of Thailand has plans to launch a 40 per cent discount promotion to attract more people to use the Airport Rail Link.
SRT governor Yuthana Thapcharoen said on Wednesday the promotion would target people working at Suvarnabhumi airport and school and university students.

The SRT had cooperated with the Department of Land Transport to provide bus services linking Makkasan station and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang to make travelling more convenient for Airport Link passengers, Mr Yuthana said.

The City Line carried 26,149 passengers on Monday - the first day of commercial operations. The SRT initially expected the system to attract 15,000 people a day. However, only 633 people used the Express Line.

The SRT forecast that both systems will cater to 50,000 to 70,000 passengers a day by the end of this year.

Passengers using the City Line pay a flat rate of 15 baht for a trip during the promotion period. Fares range from 15 baht to 45 baht, depending on the distance travelled, after Jan 1, 2011.

The fare for the Express Line is 100 baht per trip. However, the fare will be raised to 150 baht after the luggage check-in system is fully operational at Makkasan station.Bangkokpost
