Mombasa County leaders want another bridge and several bypasses built to ease traffic congestion.
Local ward representatives have also proposed that the bulk of the cargo from the Mombasa port be transported by rail to ease gridlock on the roads.Kongowea Ward representative Jabess Odour said a second bridge to connect the island with Mkomani could decongest the Nyali crossing.
Mr Oduor added that a bypass should be built to connect Tudor with Mishomoroni for motorists from Mtwapa in Kilifi County to avoid the Nyali Bridge. This would address traffic jams on roads linking the island and the North Coast, he said.
“Traffic congestion in Mombasa requires urgent attention if we are to attract more tourists and new investments. On many occasions, it takes hours to move from the island to the resorts in the North Coast due to frequent snarl-ups,” Mr Oduor said.
