Australian sentenced to death in Bali drugs trial

DENPASAR (Reuters): An Indonesian court on Tuesday sentenced an Australian man to die by firing squad for trying to smuggle heroin from the resort island of Bali, the first death penalty handed down in the high-profile trial.
The sentence matched what prosecutors had demanded for Andrew Chan, one of the accused masterminds of a group of nine Australians arrested on Bali last April for attempting to smuggle more than 8.2 kilogram (18 lb) of heroin to Australia. The verdict is the fourth delivered so far. It follows life sentences given to three other defendants who were caught at Bali’s airport with heroin strapped to their bodies.
