Snow cover in the New South Wales alps is officially the best in years.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service says that the latest snow depth reading from the official measuring site near Charlotte Pass is almost 1.4 metres, although the resorts say that more than two metres of snow has been measured in some areas.
Nevertheless, it is officially the best reading in 17 years.
Visitor numbers to Kosciuszko National Park are up on last year, with a 2 per cent increase in June and a 4 per cent increase so far in July.
The park’s Steve Redden hopes the strong visitor numbers will continue throughout the season.
“Look, I think the bookings are still down a little bit, I think people still nervous after [the] 2006 ski season, but basically the really good reporting and the marketing that the resorts are doing will bring people down, and the weather is looking very good for this weekend, so that should bring lots of people,” he said.
