\*Namma \*A Tibetan Love story \*door Kate Karko
(engels):
“Namma” meaning bride is the first-hand account of Kate Karko, a designer from London and her husband Tsedup, a Tibetan nomad. The couple met, fell in love and married in India where Kate was travelling and Tsedup was living in exile. After an absence of nine years, four of which were spent in London waiting for the right documents to come through, Tsedup was finally able to return to his family on the roof of the world.

With very limited grasp of the Amdo dialect, Kate throws herself into life with her new family. She keeps an open mind to all new experiences and approaches her time with the nomads with enduring positivity–not many erstwhile city dwellers would have been able to cope with the complete lack of personal space and the constant smell of burning yak dung. Kate’s position within the family group gave her remarkable access to nomadic life in the 21st century and full-colour photographs help bring her descriptions of her numerous in-laws to life. The reader is left with the impression of a beautiful country and a proud people whose cultural heritage is under threat of extinction. Indeed, the reality of nomadic life does not quite match up with Kate’s early romantic imaginings:

_The nomads were a tough and diligent people but now the men had been rendered impotent. Because of the fences there was no reason to herd the animals and it was more difficult for bandits to attack an enclosed encampment. Their role in the family had been all but erased. The new laws had tragically accomplished their goal of nomad domestication._
Given the author’s emotional involvement with the family and the many difficulties she must have encountered during her six-month stay with the Amdo tribe, her pervasive objectivity is something of a disappointment. The reader learns very little, for example, about the real impact of her stay on her relationship with her husband or of the more day-to-day frustrations. Despite such minor flaws, Namma remains an absorbing insight into a deeply spiritual yet fun-loving people, written by a woman whose son has become a bridge between two worlds.

- Seven Years in Tibet door Heinrich Harrer

- Return to Tibet door Heinrich Harrer
(engels)
Seven Years in Tibet told of an idyllic life on the ‘rooftop of the world’, before Harrer was forced to flee from the invading Chinese armies. Thirty years later, he returns to describe how the Chinese have attempted to destroy this ancient civilisation. Meeting old Tibetan acquaintances, including the Dalai Lama now living in exile in northern India, Harrer examines the current thaw in Peking’s relations with this isolated and mysterious country. In its vivid evocation of Tibet, past and present, Return to Tibet provides a fascinating insight into the durability of this profoundly spiritual culture.

\*Freedom in Exile: Autobiography of His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet
door:[Dalai Lama XIV Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho](http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/026-3075621-2741232?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books-uk&field-author=Dalai%20Lama%20XIV%20Bstan-%27dzin-rgya-mtsho)

The [Dalai Lama](http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/author=Lama%2c%20Dalai/%24%7B0%7D)’s autobiography should leave no one in doubt of his humility and genuine compassion. Written without the slightest hint of pretence, the exiled leader of Tibet recounts his life, from the time he was whisked away from his home in 1939 at the age of four, to his escape from Tibet in 1959, to the winning of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The backdrop of the story is the 1950 Chinese invasion of Tibet. We learn in calm detail of imprisonment, torture, rape, famine, ecological disaster and genocide that in under four decades of Chinese rule have left a million-and-a-quarter Tibetans dead and the Tibetan natural and religious landscapes decimated. Yet the Dalai Lama’s story is strangely one of hope. This man who prays for four hours a day harbours no ill will toward the Chinese and sees the potential for good everywhere he casts his gaze. Someday, he hopes, all of Tibet will be a zone of peace and the world’s largest nature preserve. Such optimism is not naive, but a result of his daily studies in Buddhist philosophy and his doctrine of Universal Responsibility. Inspiring in every way, _Freedom in Exile_ is both a historical document and a fable of deepest trust in humanity.

- Into Thin Air: Personal Account of the Everest Disaster
door: Jon Kakauer

_Into Thin Air_ is a riveting first-hand account of a catastrophic expedition up Mount Everest. In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead. Krakauer’s book is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, _Into Thin Air_ clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author’s own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads readers to ponder timeless questions.

```
                   [http://www.stripturnhout.be/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/deazurenboeddha-288x384.jpg](http://www.stripturnhout.be/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/deazurenboeddha.jpg)
```
